West Ham vs Wolves: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 1st October 2022
Kick off at 5:30pm BST
Venue: London Stadium

Match Preview:

Only the international break relieved the pressure on West Ham manager David Moyes but it will be piled back on if his team don’t get all three points at the weekend. It’s been a terrible start for the Hammers who find themselves already 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal and they come into this game in 18th place.

It’s been 5 losses from seven games and just one win so far for the Hammers and their last victory came back in August when they beat Aston Villa. So it’s been a bad moment for the club but has it really? They have drawn against Tottenham and controversially lost against Chelsea with a VAR disallowed goal and narrowly lost at Everton. But the problem has been that the club have spent a lot of money and fans will be feeling that they are not seeing the quality on the pitch that they hoped for. Home form has been poor and in fact the Hammers have the worst in the league with just 1 point earned from three games, they have scored just one goal and conceded five. The only way is up it seems.

Wolves haven’t faired much better and even though they have two points more are in 17th place. However after a slow start Bruno Lage’s side has improved and they recently put together a 3 game unbeaten streak only to lose to Manchester City, but that would have been an expected loss. On the road Wolves are yet to win and have only won one point so far, their last away game ended 0-0 against Bournemouth.

Team News:

West Ham: Nayef Aguerd has an ankle injury with no fixed return date, Ben Johnson is out long term with a hamstring injury.

Wolves: Nathan Collins is suspended and has a 3 match ban for his red card in the clubs last game. Diego Costa could make his debut after some fitness issues. Raul Jimenez is a major doubt but could be assessed after his groin injury. Chiquinho and Sasa Kalajdzic could be both out for the season now after injury setbacks both with their knee injuries.

West Ham vs Wolves Head to Head:

Last season West Ham won this fixture 1-0.

Wolves have won five of the last eight meetings between the sides.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

West Ham vs Wolves Prediction:

West Ham need the win more than Wolves do at least for the managers sakes, so and especially being at home the pressure is on Moyes side. West Ham need to be more skilful and thoughtful but also more aggressive. Wolves have been dealt some bad injury blows missing two players now for the rest of the season, and they will be feeling down about that. At the same time if you take away the Manchester City loss they had certainly found good form. The bottom line is when you have the quality that West Ham has you expect to be higher up the table, a player like Gianluca Scamacca needs to be scoring more goals. Fans have complained that Moyes will not play two forwards up front, but then again most sides in the Premier League are like that now. But perhaps playing two up front at home and being on the front foot attacking wise could be the way to go. Moyes is a good manager and a respected one but at times he has set up his teams not to lose games, and that can really have a negative effect, he needs to change things up if he wants to keep his job.

Wolves remain unpredictable but it’s never easy playing away and surely it is only a matter of time before a quality side like West Ham get the win at home, we think it could well be this weekend.
