Everton vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 24th April 2024
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

What an occasion this should be at Goodison Park as one half of Merseyside aims to try and stay in the Premier League while the other half aims to win it. There are many stories here even before kick off but one of the main ones will be that this match represents Jurgen Klopp’s final Merseyside derby.

Everton have been second best by a huge margin to Liverpool for decades now but a win here would be huge and probably would secure their Premier League status. Everton have been poor this season and have recorded just two wins since December. However their last league game did end in a 2-0 victory over fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest and moved the Toffees 5 points clear of the bottom three with a game in hand, however this is the game in hand against one of the best teams in Europe. Recent form has been an improvement for Sean Dyche’s side though with 7 points won from their last 12 on offer although in between that they were hammered 6-0 away to Chelsea.

Liverpool come into these midweek games in 2nd place on 74 points but the league is so close between themselves, Arsenal and Manchester City that even one defeat can spell disaster for the league title. Liverpool have dropped points and have just 1 win from their last three games that came last weekend as they overpowered Fulham 3-1 in an impressive away win. But they have recently lost to Crystal Palace and drew against Manchester United. Liverpool has the 3rd best away record in the league with 32 points won from 48 and they are unbeaten on the road since losing to Arsenal almost three months ago.

Team News:

Everton: Beto will miss the game due to a head injury and could be out for at least two weeks. Seamus Coleman is 50/50 as he recovers from a groin injury. Nathan Patterson is out for the season as is Dele Alli with respective hamstring and groin injuries

Liverpool: Conor Bradley won’t return for at least two weeks due to an ankle injury. Ben Doak, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip are out for the season

Everton vs Liverpool Head to Head:

This will be the 295th Merseyside derby. Everton has 83 wins, Liverpool 125 wins and there have been 86 draws.

Last season the clubs drew 0-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Liverpool won 2-0.

In the last 29 meetings Everton have won just once which came in 2020 with no fans present.

Everton vs Liverpool Prediction:

Certainly Everton’s win over Nottingham Forest and reaching the 30 point marker would have boosted the players ahead of this game. They should rise to the occasion and try to make life difficult for a Liverpool side who haven’t looked their absolute best in recent weeks. On the flipside to that Liverpool are going for the title and Klopp will have his team in fine tune, they can give him quite a going off present with a final derby win against their great rival.

You have to worry that Everton will concede here and we all know how superior Liverpool are to Everton at this present time. But it’s a derby and we expect a fiery game, everyone will be hoping with no controversial moments. On quality alone it is hard to see past Liverpool even if they are thrown a few tests on Wednesday evening.
