Luton vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 3rd May 2024
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Kenilworth Road

Match Preview:

There are three clubs that could stay up or still be relegated with 3 games left to play and for Luton it could go either way. This is a huge game for the club who will play this one before the weekend round of fixtures and a win would take them into safety for now and two points clear of Nottingham Forest. Luton are in 18th place with 25 points and come into this game having lost their last 3 in a row which has come against Manchester City, Brentford and Wolves. Home form has also been the Hatters' downfall and we have seen time and again when newly promoted sides come up they need to make playing at home for any opposition side as hard as possible. The club have tried at times, Manchester City and Arsenal both had to rely on last minute goals but the ultimate return is not good. Luton has lost 10 times from 17 games played and have won just four times here. They have won 15 points at home from a possible 51.

There was joy for Everton last week as survival was confirmed. For two seasons in a row Everton’s Premier League fate was resting on the final week of the season so to be safe in April and be able to relax for their last three games will feel like a novelty to fans. This has been another nightmare season for the club, but there have been improvements and of course the Toffees have been hampered by their 8 point deduction. In another season with no points deducted Everton would be in 13th place and whilst there have been struggles at the club that fact should be taken into account. On form Everton would be in 3rd place in the league- which is a dizzying thought for their long suffering fans. This has happened after winning their last 3 games which nobody could have seen happening. There have been wins over Nottingham Forest, Brentford and more significantly Liverpool, that win feels like it has saved the club's season and even added some polish on it. Off the field the club continues to have problems but the players can only focus on what has to be done on the pitch. Away form has seen the majority result as a loss with 8 so far and the club has not won on the road this year so far. Everton’s last away game finished in a 6-0 rout at Chelsea.

Team News:

Luton: Chiezodie Ogbene misses out but he will be hoping to return next week from a hamstring injury. There are many players missing long term for the club and they include; Marvelous Nakamba, Tom Lockyer, Daniel Potts, Jacob Brown, Issa Kabore, Amarii Bell and Mads Andersen.

Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin is expected to return for this game after illness. Seamus Coleman and Lewis Dobbin will both be assessed after recovering from injury but they have fitness issues, of the two Coleman has more of a chance to return for this game. Vitaily Mykolenko is out for the season with an ankle injury sustained in the Merseyside derby. Nathan Patterson is out for the season with a hamstring injury and Dele Alli is out with a groin injury.

Luton vs Everton Head to Head:

The last time the clubs played each other was this year and Luton won 2-1 in the FA Cup away from home.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Luton also won that and by the same scoreline of 2-1.

Before this season the last time the clubs played which was at Luton’s ground was back in 2007 in the EFL Cup in which Everton won 1-0.

The teams have only played each other four times in this century and three of those games has witnessed over 2.5 goals.

Luton vs Everton Prediction:

Luton will be on the front foot and they will have the wind in their sails knowing that they are facing a side that they have beaten not once this season but twice. This has to be a great advantage for the club. The atmosphere will be electric too and everything looks set for a possible Luton victory. However we don’t see it this way. Everton who are safe can now play their game and play without restrictions and being tense and knowing how much is resting on the game. The FFP charges have been so unpredictable and there has been talk of further charges, if that happens then Everton need all the points on the board but we think they can play a different game without too much pressure and that the club could shine in this one. Everton will be looking to catch up to Crystal Palace and there is every chance that Sean Dyche’s side could reach the 40 point marker at least this season. Luton have played some very good games but their problem remains focus and they are up against a side who seem to score quite a few goals late on. The market is really open on this fixture so try and take some advantage of the prices.
