Man Utd vs Sheff Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

Manchester United beat Coventry at the weekend to reach the FA Cup semi final but it doesn’t seem like it and not many players were jumping around in joy. This is because after leading 3-0 with 20 minutes left to play and cruising they let Coventry back into it and the side pulled it back to 3-3, finally United won on penalties to save their blushes. Perhaps the semi final has defined United’s season thus far- can score goals but have no backbone and this has certainly been another troubled season for the club. Still a Europa League place is up for grabs and they will face rivals Manchester City in the final of the FA Cup for the second successive season.

United are in 7th place and face a mini battle with Newcastle for 6th and both clubs have 50 points coming into these midweek batches of games. Erik ten Hag’s side have had many periods of poor form and this is one of them, right at the time where they need to be able to go on a consistent run but it’s been 5 games since they last won a match which was against Everton six weeks ago. Since then they have been dogged by draws against Liverpool, Brentford and in their last game 2-2 at Bournemouth. It just hasn’t been good enough and one wonders if Ten Hag will even be in charge next season?

Sheffield United are bottom and it is fair to say this is where Chris Wilder’s side will finish after Burnley picked up 3 points last weekend. It means that the Blades are seven points from 19th and 10 from safety, they could be relegated by next weekend. But everyone associated with the club knows that they will be playing Championship football next season that is for sure. At the weekend they were smashed by Burnley 4-1 and at home made 23 losses this season. The Blades have the worst away record in the league with just 1 win and only 6 points earned from a possible 48. The writing looks on the wall for this game.

Team News:

Manchester United: Jonny Evans could be assessed but remains a doubt as he recovers from a muscle injury. Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez are both not due back for at least two weeks. Luke Shaw is out for at least 3 weeks with a muscle injury. Tyrell Malacia and Anthony Martial are both out long term and may not return again this season. Rapahel Varane remains sidelined with a foot injury and isn’t expected back until next month

Sheffield United: Jack Robinson and Tom Davies could be assessed but remain doubtful but if so could return next weekend. There are long term injuries to Max Lowe, Rhys Norrington-Davies, John Egan, Chris Basham, George Baldock and Rhian Brewster

Man Utd vs Sheff Utd Head to Head:

The clubs haven’t played this fixture in 3 years, when they did Sheffield United won 2-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Manchester United won 2-1.

4 of the last five meetings has witnessed both teams to score.

Man Utd vs Sheff Utd Prediction:

Manchester United need a big convincing result, they just do, we haven’t seen that from the club and at home against a battered and tired looking Sheffield United one would expect that this could be the perfect time to inflict that. Recent games between the two clubs have been fairly close though but this is in different circumstances. A good result even against the bottom side will take the heat off of Ten Hag and United are also due a win. United are around 1.30 to win so the better choice for value will be the ht/ft market, and let’s hope that Ten Hag has his side firing and they start the game off well. Don’t be fooled if this game was taking place a few months ago while we would still think that United should win, we would be predicting a harder and closer game but there doesn’t seem like there is much left in the tank now for the Blades, this game should be an easy pick for United, with no excuses.
