Man Utd vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 21st February 2021
Kick off at 7pm GMT
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

Manchester United are 10 points behind league leaders Manchester City coming into this weekend and they can’t afford to keep dropping points but this is exactly what they are doing recently. Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s side have won just once in their last five games and have earned six points from their last 15.

The league title looks over for them and in fact 2nd place could be under threat too as Leicester in 3rd have the same number of points. The Red Devils have shown great form this season but with Solskjaer in charge they do tend to go on miserable six week runs and this could be one of them.

Last weekend the club could only draw against relegation threatened West Bromwich Albion and that was another two points thrown away. However in midweek United looked brilliant as they beat Real Sociedad 4-0 away from home in the Champions League. It was a great win for the club as Sociedad have been impressive in La Liga this season and United will surely qualify for the quarter finals of the Champions League now.

Home form in general has not been good for Solskjaer’s side however they have won 3 of their last five games and their last match ended in a 3-3 draw against Everton.

Newcastle could go down, that’s the reality and there will be huge pressure on the club if Fulham have won on Saturday. By this time there could be just 3 points in it but even if Fulham have lost six points from 18th is a close shave. Newcastle haven’t always been poor but they have failed to reach any type of consistency with 3 defeats and two wins in their last five games, and they will be the underdogs for this encounter.

Last weekend the Magpies lost 2-0 at Chelsea and on the road they have won just 3 times so far. Recently they have beaten Everton 2-0 which was impressive but the club have lost 4 of their last five away games.

Team News:

Manchester United: Edinson Cavani has a muscle issue but the club are confident that he will make this game. Scott McTominay received a knock in midweek and he will be assessed. Paul Pogba is out for at least another 10 days due to his thigh injury. Donny van de Beek should be back after a minor muscle injury in midweek.

Newcastle: Callum Wilson is ruled out until April with a hamstring injury. Fernandez misses out due to fitness issues. Javier Manquillo and Fabian Schar are out long term.

Man Utd vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Manchester United have won the last two meetings against Newcastle by the same score line of 4-1.

Manchester United have won 4 of the last 5 league meetings.

Newcastle have not won at Old Trafford in the league since 2013.

There is a 50% chance to see over 3.5 goals.

Man Utd vs Newcastle Prediction:

The way Newcastle set themselves up usually falls into the hands of Manchester United and that’s why the Red Devils have been able to score 8 goals past the Magpies in their last two games. This is a difficult task for Steve Bruce because if he sets up with defence then we have a game where the home side relentlessly attack for 90 minutes and one would feel that Newcastle do not have the defence to hold out. If they attack gaps are left and this, of course is what a fast paced Manchester United side want.

We don’t expect a surprise for this game although Manchester United have given us some this season, and this should be a straight forward victory with a few goals for the home side. Newcastle just look poor and they may have to concentrate on earning points at home for the remainder of the season.

Man Utd vs Newcastle Betting Tips:

Manchester United to beat Newcastle with a -1 goal start at 1.80

Anytime goalscorer: Edinson Cavani at 1.91

Manchester United to score 3+ goals at 2.10
