Fulham vs Chelsea: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 16th January 2021
Kick off at 5:30pm GMT
Venue: Craven Cottage

Match Preview:

It’s the west London derby this weekend and on first glance we can see that these two teams are miles apart but taking in recent form Chelsea seem to have quite a game on their hands.

Fulham are fighting to stay up and have drawn their last 5 games. This batch of games has included not losing to the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton, and Fulham’s last game was against Tottenham where they drew 1-1 after being 1-0 down away from home. It was an impressive result for The Cottagers.

One has to have admiration for Fulham and manager Scott Parker, the club with limited resources have really worked hard this past month, and whilst they are not winning games they are not losing either and the 5 points won over the last five games could be huge come the end of the season.

Chelsea have dropped to 9th and are 10 points behind league leaders Manchester United with the same games played. A possible league title chase looks fragile now but the clubs objectives will be finishing in a top 4 place and that is still on. The gap to 4th is currently six points.

It’s not been a good period for Chelsea and they come into this game with no wins from their last 3 league matches. Their last match was a 3-1 loss at home to Manchester City and away from home Frank Lampard’s team have lost their last 3, losing to Everton, Wolves and Arsenal. Victory here could take them up a couple of places depending on other results.

Team News:

Fulham: Mario Lemina missed the last game for an unspecified problem so remains a doubt for this game. Tom Cairney has a knee injury though it isn’t thought to be serious but this game could come too quick for him. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is ineligible to face his parent club and can’t play. Aleksandar Mitrovic had a muscle injury and will face an assessment ahead of the match.

Chelsea: N’Golo Kante is suspended for this game beacuse he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season. He is the only player out for the Blues ahead of the encounter.

Fulham vs Chelsea Head to Head:

The last time the clubs played here was in 2019 when Chelsea won 2-1.

Chelsea have won the last 5 league meetings.

Fulham haven’t beaten Chelsea at home since 2006.

Fulham vs Chelsea Prediction:

Chelsea have the team to win this game by 2 or 3 goals but the club have been underwhelming in recent weeks. They would have taken a boost in the FA Cup as they beat Morecambe 4-0 but some perspective has to be taken on against a lower league club.

Fulham will approach the game to close down Chelsea and make this a typical derby match and the value seems to be with the home side, possibly on the double chance to cover the draw.

Chelsea are the better team but we have to respect what Fulham has achieved over the past month it isn’t easy to keep Liverpool and Tottenham in check and this isn’t the type of game Chelsea want or need right now.
