Everton vs Watford: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 17th August 2019
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Everton were arguably involved in the dullest Premier League game of the opening weekend when their match against Crystal Palace ended 0-0. In fairness, at least being the away team the Toffeemen kept a clean sheet and earned a point, but there wasn’t that much to talk about after the game.

Instead there was a strange atmosphere from both sets of supporters who had one eye on Wilfried Zaha who sat on the bench for most of the game. The Palace player came so close to joining Everton and there was a feeling of what have the club missed, ultimately with the game ending 0-0 and Everton getting the services of Moise Kean who also came off of the bench it’s simply time to move on from that.

Fans could be hoping for Kean to start this game at home and be introduced to the home support properly, and it is possible that the former Juventus man will be paired with Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front.

Watford were simply humbled at home to a more prepared and better Brighton side and lost their first match in front of their fans 3-0. Playing Everton away in their next match is a big ask and the Hornets could well end up losing their opening two games and getting off to a dreadful start.

Of course there is some history between the two sides in the form of Marco Silva the Everton manager who used to be at Watford, and that can and has caused friction between the two clubs. Everton also have former Watford striker Richarlison. With Watford getting the upper hand last time the clubs met the feeling will be that Everton will want to get their revenge.

Team News:

Everton: Morgan Schneiderlin is suspended after his two yellow cards against Palace last weekend. Andre Gomes picked up a calf injury on the opening day of the season but could still be included in the squad with a late fitness test due to take place. Leighton Baines is edging closer to returning and is tipped to be included in the squad after his knock. Fabian Delph looks set to miss this match with a continued groin strain

Watford: Nathaniel Chalobah is expected to return after having a lack of match fitness which meant he missed the first game of the season. Domingos Quina is also expected to return after his muscle injury but Danny Welbeck looks to be ruled out of this game through a lack of match fitness

Everton vs Watford Head to Head:

The last time the teams met at Goodison Park the game finished 2-2.

For 8 games in a row these meetings have a pattern of over then under goals. If this was to continue then this game would be over 2.5 goals.

For 6 games in a row the 2nd half has produced more goals.

Everton vs Watford Prediction:

We think this game could be set up nicely to see Richarlison get off the mark and for Everton to ease to a solid win. The club will relish returning home to a packed stadium and should play some good football but they will have to control the pace of the game. We will also go for history and back more goals in the 2nd half as Watford could get more tired like they did in their first game. In truth anything but all three points here would be seen as a disappointment for Marco Silva’s team who will be the favourites to get their first victory of the season.
