Chelsea vs Man City: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 25th September 2021
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

There are a lot of great teams in the Premier League that’s why pundits and fans together are happy to claim that the league is the most competitive in Europe if not the world. However it is very possible that these two sides will either finish 1st or 2nd this season.

What we have will be fascinating to witness. In one corner are the champions, in the other is a team who want to be back at the top and claim the league title and do it in style. Of course this is also a repeat of last seasons Champions League final which saw Chelsea edge out City, so there will be a lot to talk about even before a ball is kicked.

Chelsea are exactly where they want to be after 5 games and that is in 1st place, albeit only on goal difference to Liverpool and Manchester United but there is no denying that Thomas Tuchel’s side look solid and quite brilliant. Their only glitch so far was drawing 1-1 at Anfield against Liverpool and even then they had to play the entire 2nd half with 10 men after defender Reece James was sent off. That was the grit of the side, last weekend we saw the power of them.

The Blues went to Tottenham for the derby and won 3-0 and there was a gulf in class and a harsh reminder to Harry Kane that he may not be winning any trophies yet again. Chelsea like the score line of 3-0 and in fact they have won both of their games at home by this score line making light work of Aston Villa and Crystal Palace. In midweek Chelsea advanced in the EFL Cup as they beat Aston Villa on penalties after that game had finished 1-1.

Manchester City are looking strong but you get the feeling their players are not quite up to par yet, though don’t tell that to Arsenal and Norwich fans (both clubs losing 5-0). But there is the other side much like the beginning of last season where for their standards City started slowly. We have seen the champions drop points against Tottenham and surprisingly last weekend at home to Southampton they couldn’t even score with that match finishing 0-0. It means that City come into this game in 5th place and are 3 points behind their hosts.

Manchester City who have made the EFL Cup their cup in recent years eased past Wycombe as expected by 6-1. The game was made interesting given that Wycombe had taken the lead before the floodgates opened.

Team News:

Chelsea: Christian Pulisic is back in training and will face a late test after his ankle injury. Edouard Mendy is recovering from a hip injury and will also face a late test.

Manchester City: Ilkay Gundogan has a knock and will be assessed. Rodri is a doubt with a muscle injury. John Stones has the same problem but may not return until next month. Oleksandr Zinchenko has a knock and will be assessed.

Chelsea vs Man City Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 3-1 to Manchester City.

The last time the clubs played each other was in last seasons Champions League final which Chelsea won 1-0.

Chelsea have won the last 3 meetings between the sides.

Chelsea vs Man City Prediction

This is a chance for an early season marker and Manchester City will be well aware that even a draw here would feel significant. Though City did win last time they played in the league at Stamford Bridge when Frank Lampard was still the manager. Everything has changed under Thomas Tuchel and Pep Guardiola does not have a great record against him.

The game has been set up well, a titanic battle for sure but Chelsea have to be the favourites coming into this game and a win would be huge for the club as they would move 6 points ahead of the champions. We can look at how City performed against Tottenham away from home and they lost that one in London, this will be ten times more difficult. Chelsea will have to work hard but they are simply winning games and not conceding. Indeed the only goal the Blues have let in so far was a Liverpool penalty.

We will be backing Chelsea in this game.
