Chelsea vs Man City: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 3rd January 2021
Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

A huge clash will take place on Sunday evening when Chelsea and Manchester City the mega rich clubs of a new era for the Premier League clash in London.

From the last 10 years these two sides have won 7 league titles between them and whilst neither are the favourite to win it this season both are in a position to challenge Liverpool.

The pressure will rightly be on both sides but one feels that Pep Guardiola will have more backing from City if they lose this game than Frank Lampard will have from Chelsea. The Blues have not been getting the right results lately and have slipped down to 6th place and they have just 1 win in their past five games. As a result Chelsea have fallen off the pace by 7 points but still have a great chance to bounce back and Liverpool have not been as consistent as last season so there is every chance of that.

Chelsea dropped another 2 points in their last game and this one would have hurt as it was at home as they drew 1-1 with Aston Villa. Though overall the Blues do have a strong home record and indeed have the 2nd best in the league. They have only lost once at home so far which was against Liverpool.

Manchester City are in 8th place though they have 2 games in hand over Chelsea and league leaders Liverpool. If they win those games then in theory they would only be 1 point behind the Reds. Recent form is good for Guardiola’s team who have won back to back games, their last fixture ended with a 2-0 win over Newcastle.

City’s last away game was a good 1-0 win over Southampton who have started the season well. City have lost just once on the road but haven’t been very convincing either with 3 draws from seven played. There has also been a lack of goals from the attack minded team just seven on the road so far. However along with Aston Villa they have conceded the least amount of goals away from home with just 5 so far.

Team News:

Chelsea: Reece James has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Hakim Ziyech has recovered from injury and he will face a late assessment.

Manchester City: Ederson is ill and will miss this game. Eric Garcia is 50/50 and remains a doubt because of his leg injury from last month. Ilkay Gundogan will face a late test with a minor knock. Gabriel Jesus is ill and looks very likely he will be ruled out it is the same situation for Kyle Walker.

Chelsea vs Man City Head to Head:

Last season Chelsea won this fixture 2-1.

Manchester City have not won at Chelsea in the league since 2017.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

The clubs have not drawn in the league since 2015.

Chelsea vs Man City Prediction:

Manchester City are missing a few key players and won’t be able to field their strongest side in what feels like an important ‘six pointer’ against a potential top 4 rival. Though City have only lost once away so far they could struggle here just like they have on their last couple of trips.

There is a lot of pressure on Lampard and Chelsea going into this game but if Ziyech does come back they virtually have no one out and will feel that they can take the game to City, control the pace and come away with three points. City haven’t had the best of times in London against quality clubs, think of Tottenham a few weeks ago. This of course is never an easy game to call, if City click Chelsea will have problems against that type of quality but we are backing Lampard’s team to see this one through and get the win, or at least a draw.

We also expect to see both teams get on the scoresheet, so a both teams to score bet could be a good option.

Chelsea vs Man City Betting Tips:

Asian handicap (+0.5 Chelsea) at 1.65

Both teams to score at 1.61
