Liverpool vs Sheffield Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 4th April 2024
Kick off at 7:30pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

It was advantage Liverpool this past weekend as they beat Brighton and watched their title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City draw. All three teams are still in the title hunt but the Reds perhaps should be considered as title favourites now as the games tick down. They will take on bottom club Sheffield United and while the Premier League has become much more stronger, difficult and competitive over the years everyone will be expecting a home win.

It won’t make easy reading for the Blades to see that Liverpool has the best home record in the league and after 14 games remain undefeated and have won 39 points from a possible 42- that is a staggering record. Liverpool’s latest home win came against Brighton which was welcomed as previous to that they had drawn against Manchester City. Liverpool have won 13 points from their last 15 on offer and remain in a very strong position in Jurgen Klopp’s last season with them.

Sheffield United know the task at hand and this game will be about defending, focusing and rinse and repeat. The club in 20th place will be kicking themselves this season, yes they have quite rightly been the poorest side but at the same time they have been in many winning positions only to throw it away. With five minutes of normal time remaining Chris Wilder’s side were beating Fulham 3-1 at the weekend however it finished 3-3 and the Blades were the home side. They have 15 points and if we include goal difference are 11 points from safety, although have 2 games in hand over Nottingham Forest who are currently keeping them down. The club has at least drawn their last two games but they need wins not draws.

Team News:

Liverpool: Curtis Jones will be assessed for fitness issues. Alisson remains out and is not due back for three weeks due to a hamstring injury. Diogo Jota isn’t back for two weeks as he has a knee injury. It is the same problem for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Andrew Robertson looks set to miss out but could return at the weekend, he has some fitness problems following injury. Ben Doak, Stefan Bajcetic, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are all out for long periods.

Sheffield United: Cameron Archer will be assessed for his calf, Tom Davies is expected to miss between 3-4 weeks with a hamstring injury. The following players are all out long term; Rhys Norrington-Davies, John Egan, Max Lowe, Rhian Brewster, George Baldock and Chris Basham

Liverpool vs Sheffield Utd Prediction:

This game is pitting the best home side in the league against the worst home side in the league plus its 1st vs 20th and it’s all taking place at Anfield. We do not see a possible upset in this game and the bookies believe the same, making the Reds unbackable. But you can’t blame them for that, we expect Liverpool to win and score a few. They need to be aggressive and from the start this game should follow a familiar pattern. The only way the away side gets anything will be a draw and probably a 0-0 one at that, and that will have to include a miracle performance from every Blades player on the pitch. This is a club who have shipped 9 goals in their last five away games and have just 6 points on the road from a possible 42. We all know there is only going to be one outcome.

It is interesting to note that many recent games between the two clubs have finished under 2.5 goals, that isn’t something you would expect and like Luton and Burnley you have to respect the fact that apart from the odd result these teams have come up from the Championship and really got stuck in and at times made the best teams in the league have to dig deep. This isn’t something we expect to see in midweek and Liverpool has the quality to get a few goals at home, as they chase down the league title.
