Liverpool vs Man City: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 10th March 2024
Kick off at 3:45pm GMT
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

The biggest game in the Premier League by far will take place on Sunday as the two best sides in the league for the past six years will clash at Anfield- It can only be Liverpool against Manchester City. No other clubs have won the league title since 2017 and while Liverpool have only won once in 2020- they have been there and thereabouts and unlucky not to have won. For Manchester City they have won the past 3 titles and are trying to make it 4 in a row which has never been achieved in the history of English top flight football.

Liverpool are the team in City’s way currently and are 1st in the league and have a 1 point advantage over the champions. Of course this isn’t a two horse race and Arsenal are right in the mix too but if Liverpool win this game to go 4 points clear of such a dangerous rival as City would feel huge. For City they have the chance to go 2 points clear of their rival. There seems nothing between the sides but with a 1 point advantage and the fact they are at home, for now, Liverpool are just edging as the favourites for the title. All can change very quickly in football as we have seen, so let the battle commence.

For Liverpool, form has been solid and following their defeat against Arsenal last month they have gone on to win their last four games in a row with wins over Burnley, Brentford, Luton and Nottingham Forest- all good but wins you would have expected the Reds to pull off. At home the encouraging news for them is that they are unbeaten and from 13 games have won 11 of them and drawn twice. They have also scored the most goals at home in the league with 37 so far and have won their last 4 in a row here. Liverpool are looking strong and have just won the first trophy of the season winning the EFL Cup by beating Chelsea in the final and they have just thumped Sparta Prague away from home 5-1 in the 1st leg of their Europa League knockout tie.

Manchester City have won 4 of their past five games including winning their last three in a row with wins over Brentford and Bournemouth and last weekend they won the Manchester derby with a 3-1 victory after trailing in that game. City has the 2nd best away record in the league where they have won 28 points from a possible 39 and won their last five in a row. The club knocked out Copenhagen in the Champions League last 16 with an aggregate score of 6-2 and Erling Haaland is scoring goals again, he has managed an incredible 8 goals in his last 3 competitive games.

Team News:

Liverpool: Alisson is out with a hamstring injury, Trent Alexander-Arnold won’t return for at least two weeks with a knee injury. Diogo Jota remains out with a knee injury as does Ben Doak with the same injury. Curtis Jones has been ruled out with a shin injury until the end of the month at least. Ibrahima Konate is only 50/50 for this game due to his hamstring. Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip, Ryan Gravenberch and Stefan Bajcetic are all out long term

Manchester City: Jeremy Doku will be assessed for an ankle injury, Jack Grealish is sidelined with a groin injury and won’t return before the end of this month. Matheus Nunes has a hand injury and will be assessed

Liverpool vs Man City Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 1-0.

In the last 5 meetings when Liverpool have been at home Manchester City has managed just one win.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the clubs drew 1-1.

There is a 90% chance to see both teams to score.

Liverpool vs Man City Prediction:

Two brilliant clubs will go head to head and not only will the Premier League stop and watch, so will the world in one of the biggest competitive games of the footballing season. On evidence since the beginning of this season we see Liverpool having the better first half and City coming into the game in the 2nd. City remain a side sluggish to start games and with the fantastic heated atmosphere of Anfield we expect much of the same in what has happened in previous seasons here, if Liverpool are going to win it will be based on their attacking performance in the first 45 minutes of the game.

Our choice is for the draw- and these teams have served up a few of those over the years. But we expect a score draw and plenty of action and chances for both sides, plenty will be talked about after the game too. Haaland will be desperate to shine in such a huge game, he needs two more goals to get to 20 for the league season, sit down, relax and enjoy what should be a great spectacle.
