Match Preview:
Chelsea will be aiming to make it 4 games without defeat when they take on Newcastle at home and the fixture has added spice given that this is 11th v 10th. However even with a win Chelsea cannot go past their visitors this week. Chelsea’s last two games have both ended in draws and those have come against Manchester City and Brentford. Overall, while this has been a troubled season for the Blues, form over the past month has improved. At home the Blues had won 4 games in a row although they were surprised to lose here in their last game against Wolves when they conceded four goals and lost 4-2. This has been the story of the club's season, where it seems like they have turned a corner to go on a good run only to be reminded of their shortcomings this season.
Newcastle are four points clear of their hosts and they could move up to 7th place on goal difference against West Ham with victory here, so there is a lot to play for as they try to change 3 places. Form has been patchy although the Magpies have only lost once in their last five games however draws against the likes of Luton and Bournemouth in that time have not helped the club. Eddie Howe’s side’s last game ended in a good 3-0 win at home against Wolves. Newcastle’s problems this season have been away from home where they have lost 8 of their 13 games and earned just 11 points from a possible 39. The club were thrashed 4-1 in their last away game against Arsenal which felt like a reinforcement that there is a gulf and despite Newcastle’s money they have a lot of catching up to do.
Team News:
Chelsea: Benoit Badiashile is not due back until the end of the month as he recovers from a muscle injury. Carney Chukwuemeka has an ankle injury and remains a major doubt to return for this game. Levi Colwill is ruled out with a toe injury, Conor Gallagher should be fine after illness, Christoper Nkunku is out for between 2-3 weeks with a knock. Lesley Ugochukwu, Romeo Lavia, Reece James, Wesley Fofana and Ben Chilwell are all out long term.
Newcastle: Matt Targett could be assessed but only has a 50/50 chance to return due to a lack of match fitness. Joelinton is out until May with a thigh injury, Lewis Hall cannot play against his parent club. Nick Pope is still a month away due to an ongoing shoulder injury. Kieran Trippier is sidelined for 2-3 weeks still as he recovers from a calf injury. Callum Wilson is out until at least May with a tendon injury. Sandro Tonali is suspended for the season.

These two sides have a lot in common presently, both have money and ambitions but both have suffered a plethora of injuries this season which has continued and really has affected both of their campaigns. The clubs have met here this season in the EFL Cup which happened at the end of 2023 and the game finished 1-1. Chelsea will be looking to avenge the 4-1 defeat earlier in the season and we think that the Blues come into this game with more of a spring in their step and possibly swagger than the Magpies and could be the team to back.
This is an equal game though and there will be chances for both sides, but anyone wanting to back Newcastle has to be worried about the clubs away form this season. It’s also worth noting that Newcastle have failed to beat Chelsea in London for almost 12 years. Expect a good energetic game but we think Mauricio Pochettino’s side will have the belief in them to get the win and try to turn on the style.
