Chelsea vs Man Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 4th April 2024
Kick off at 8:15pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

Both clubs have underperformed this season so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in midweek, but with Chelsea the home side one can expect more pressure on them. This is especially so given that the Blues could only draw 2-2 with 19th placed Burnley last weekend despite leading 2-1 in that game. There is a sense that Chelsea are slowly moving in the right direction but also a sense that they are taking side steps in getting there.

Chelsea come into this game in 12th place but with 40 points they are still on course to grab a final European place with a consistent run but consistency has not been something Chelsea have produced this season. While draws have stopped the Blues from really advancing up the table they have at least gone their last five games without defeat and with 18 points they would rank in 5th placed based on the last 10 games played.

Manchester United almost beat Brentford last weekend that is how low it has become at one of the great sides in the Premier League era, they didn’t deserve it and in the end the game finished in a 1-1 draw. Having fallen 9 points behind Tottenham United look best placed to finish in 6th place and if they did that would certainly mean no Champions League football next season. However they will not give up the chase just yet. Seven points have been won from their last five games which pretty much summarises the club's season so far- average. Away form has replicated home and the club have won 23 points from 45 and their majority result on the road is the win with 7 so far. However they have also managed to lose six times. United have not won away since overcoming Luton six weeks ago.

Team News:

Chelsea: Trevoh Chabolah, Ben Chilwell and Malo Gusto are all in contention to return but will have to be assessed first. Christopher Nkunku has a hamstring injury but could be assessed next weekend. Reece James, Robert Sanchez, Lesley Ugochukwu, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Carney Chukwuemeka all remain out and for long term

Manchester United: Victor Lindelof remains at just 50/50 to return from a hamstring injury. Jonny Evans will be assessed as will Rapahel Varane for a foot injury. Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial and Tyrell Malacia remain out long term

Chelsea vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 1-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Manchester United won 2-1.

The last 5 meetings in a row have all seen both teams to score.

Chelsea vs Man Utd Prediction:

If this game ended in a draw we could hold up our hands and say that this sums up both teams this season. However Chelsea need to focus because despite a poor campaign they have 2-3 games in hand on some teams ahead of them and of course this is one of them. Chelsea could really finish strongly and drive up the table and being at home they have every chance to do well here. One could believe that Manchester United will not be feeling their best and off par after last weekend but we have seen how this side remains unpredictable and can turn in a good performance. The market is wide open for this game and this may be down to the fact that both sets of players are lacking confidence but this feels like a real opportunity for the Blues to get back into the mix after dropping points at the weekend, can they finally bring their A game in April?
