Arsenal vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Emirates Stadium

Match Preview:

A host of midweek fixtures kicks off on Tuesday as league title hopes are placed on the line for Arsenal as they take on a difficult looking London derby. Arsenal went back into 1st place over the weekend as they beat Wolves 2-0 away from home and with Manchester City not playing their task was made easier. Liverpool however also won and it means that the two sides share the same points on 74 each- the Gunners has a far superior goal record though. Arsenal has the opportunity to go 4 points clear of Manchester City although bear in mind that Pep Guardiola’s side would have 2 games in hand.

The Gunners last game at home ended in a surprise for many as they lost and were outplayed 2-0 by Aston Villa. It was only the club's 2nd loss at home this season. Overall form has still been strong for Arsenal with 3 wins from their past four games and they have won 38 points from 48 at home. Chelsea are in great shape to charge for a place in Europe but how will their consistency shape up? They have looked brilliant at times but it’s been in small flashes and the Blues can’t seem to put a 3-4 game run together, that has been their problem. For every time they smash Everton 6-0 like they did last weekend they let the bottom club in Sheffield United come back twice to draw 2-2, an amazing 4-3 epic comeback against Manchester United has been another recent result but then we are reminded that this is the same side who could only draw at home to 19th placed Burnley. Chelsea clearly have problems but they have games in hand over direct rivals so still have a chance to finish the season well.

Chelsea are in 9th place and have an incredible 3 games in hand over 8th placed West Ham and are only 1 point behind them although the cut off for Europe could be the top 7 but Chelsea are just three points from that target, a win here would really put them in the mix. While Chelsea can blow hot and cold we have also witnessed the club being able to raise their game against the better quality sides this season and they would be more than happy to damage a London rival’s title bid.

Team News:

Arsenal: For the Gunners only Jurrien Timber misses out with a long term knee injury.

Chelsea: Christopher Nkunku has fitness issues and isn’t expected back until next month. Robert Sanchez could be assessed after illness and has a chance to play. Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana, Reece James and Lesley Ugochukwu are all out long term.

Arsenal vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season Arsenal won this fixture 3-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game finished 2-2.

In the last 9 meetings Chelsea has managed just 1 win.

Arsenal vs Chelsea Prediction:

For decades Chelsea were in the shadow of Arsenal but for almost 20 years the Blues have been able to reverse that. However in league games that pendulum has swung back in Arsenal’s favour and they have gone back to being the dominant force. So what will give here? Both clubs have recently been dumped out of cup competitions, with Arsenal it was the Champions League but they went a long way to patching that up with a win at the weekend. For Chelsea they lost 1-0 at the weekend in the semi-final of the FA Cup against Manchester City. The way the goal came in the final ten minutes would have felt like a hammer blow, but they have games here to pick themselves up and try to play European football next season.

Arsenal have it all to win and we think they are more capable of doing so being at home but their unit just looks that much stronger, focused and confident. We will find out if the loss here against Aston Villa was just one of those off days and blips, lose here and their title hopes would be on the ropes, but we expect a win for the Gunners. It comes down to how badly do they want it? We should be impressed by their win over a decent side away to home against Wolves at the weekend with that game being 0-0 for a long period of the game, the Gunners found a way and we expect them to do so again for this test.
