Aston Villa vs Wolves: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 27th June 2020
Kick off at 12.30pm BST
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

The pandemic has meant that we have had to get quickly used to a different set up and that remains the case this Saturday as only one Premier League game will take place, and it is at lunch time.

One team are fighting for survival whilst the other are trying to qualify for Europe. Aston Villa have not started well since football’s return with no wins from their first 3 games gaining just 2 points from 9.

They could have counted themselves lucky against Sheffield United as the Blades looked to have had a perfectly good goal not given because of hawk eye. In their next match they only lost 2-1 to Chelsea but were far the weaker side. One could say that their recent 1-1 draw with Newcastle was impressive given that the Magpies won their last game and Villa were behind.

However Villa still look like one of the favourites to go down and come into this match in 19th place with 27 points. Just two wins could change everything for Dean Smith’s side and they do have some tough games coming up. But they have failed the whole season to put a good batch of games together.

Wolves are in 6th place with 49 points and have won their first two games after the restart beating West Ham and Bournemouth. With Bournemouth directly in front of Villa, Wolves actually did Villa a favour.

Nuno Espirito Santos’ side have been brilliant this season by their standards and are only being denied 5th place on goal difference to Manchester United. Many people will feel that the club are a shoe-in for a Europa League finish but one wonders if the club are not thinking even higher than that? They have given themselves a chance of a top 4 finish and a win here would put them right in the mix.

Form is great for the away side who have won 13 points from their last 15 and have lost just 1 game in their last 10. Indeed the club would be 3rd in the form league going by their last 10 matches with only Liverpool and Manchester City ahead of them.

Team News:

Aston Villa: Daniel Drinkwater will be hopeful of playing in this game after having a knock. Bjorn Engels is out with his achilles. Frederic Guilbert has a knee injury but has returned to training

Wolves: No new injuries for the club coming into this game.

Aston Villa vs Wolves Head to Head:

Earlier in the season Wolves won the home match 2-1.

The last time the teams played here was in the Carabao Cup last year which Aston Villa won 2-1.

The last 3 games have seen both teams to score.

Wolves have not won at Villa Park since 2011 going back 4 games.

Aston Villa vs Wolves Prediction:

Wolves should be regarded as favourites to win the game and the one worry for Aston Villa is that they are not creating enough clear cut chances. This is a tough game for them though they will be happy to be at home yet again, their 3rd time in 4 games. Dean Smith will be hoping that his side have taken something from the Newcastle match.

Wolves are playing very professionally and have controlled the pace against West Ham and Bournemouth. With all due respect they may look at Villa and think they could get points against them. But this could be a close game and we don’t expect one team to run away with it. Raul Jimenez is on fire right now so we are tempted to back him again to score and just to note he did score earlier in the season against Villa.

In the last few meetings there have been a flurry of cards shown, there seems to be a real pattern here. For small stakes we should go for high booking points, and of course be cautious knowing that there is no crowd influence.

Aston Villa vs Wolves Betting Tips:
