Our first selection (Tranmere) finished just 2 points outside the playoff positions last season, and they are sure to be gunning for promotion again this season. They are currently 1 point off the playoff positions this season, and only 4 points off 1st position and automatic promotion, so there is all to play for. Unlike last season, their main strength this season has been their home performances, with 5 wins and just 1 loss, conceding just 4 goals in the process, they are a very difficult team to beat at Prenton Park. They are defensively strong wherever they play, however they struggle more for scoring goals on their travels. They have a good recent record against today's opponents (Gateshead), winning their last 2 encounters convincingly 4-1 and 3-1, which will give them the psychological edge. Gateshead are a mid table team who are struggling away from home, they provide a goals threat wherever they play but they are defensively weaker on their travels, leaking 11 goals in 6 away games, which has lead to 4 away defeats. Tranmere should be strong enough to get at least a point tonight.
Our second selection (Dundalk) are taking on Derry City for the second time after Derry managed an impressive comeback from 2 goals down in their 1st semi-final FAI Cup clash to force a replay. Dundalk are the defending FAI Cup winners, so will definitely be taking this game seriously in the hopes of being able to defend their crown. They are leading the league by 4 points in a battle which is now a two horse race with Cork City, and they have a very good history against today's opponents Derry City, winning 10 of their last 13 encounters. Derry City's form hasn't been the best recently winning just 2 of their last 10 league games, and scoring just 12 goals in the process. Dundalk are unlikely to let a lead slip this time round, and with them being in superior form leading up to this game, i expect them to progress to the final at the second time of asking.
