Our first selection (Man City) go into this match after a confidence boosting and very controversial win over Everton in the Capital One Cup. To have come back from the deficit they had will have given them a great deal of confidence that they can force the win when it really matters. Their away form hasn't been brilliant, and they did only manage a 0-0 draw with Villa last time out, however they were still by far the better team, and they should create enough chances to make some of them count today. Aston Villa have been much improved recently, however narrow wins against Wycombe and a hugely out of form Crystal Palace shouldn't be enough to make us think they are now capable of beating one of the best club teams in Europe. There will be some rotation today, probably from both teams, but Man City have huge squad depth and therefore should have the quality to win today.
Our second selection (Zwolle) sit mid-table in the Netherlands Eredivisie, as do their opponents today (Groningen), so you might not think there isn't much between them, and their isn't a huge amount. However, when you look at them in terms of home and away form, there is a larger difference. Zwolle have a good but not exceptional home performance, losing only 3 of their 10 home games, all to European competition placed teams. Groningen on the other hand have a pretty terrible away record, they have just 1 away league win all season, and that was an unconvincing win over bottom of the league Graafschap who have lost 15 of their 20 league games. Groningen are also really struggling for goals away from home, scoring only 7 in 10 away games, yet conceding a far larger 18. With home advantage, Zwolle should have enough about them not to lose today.
