Luton vs Burnley: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Tuesday 3rd October 2023
Kick off at 7:30pm BST
Venue: Kenilworth Road

Match Preview:

This Tuesday evening clash is the game in hand for both of these sides following their early postponement and it is a huge 3 points at stake. Already at this early stage of the season you sense that a draw won’t do for either side as the season hints of a relegation battle for both sides. Luton have had a poor start but they will want to focus on the here and now and last weekend they picked up their first victory of the season and their first ever in the Premier League as they went to Everton and won 2-1. It was seen as a surprise result and while the Hatters did have to ride their luck at times they dug in and they will be using that win to force the issue in this encounter.

You have to look at any positives once you are down there and while Luton did start poorly one has to ask if the club are perhaps turning a corner, even a small one. The Everton victory means that they have gone their last two games without defeat as they also drew recently with Wolves, this was also their last home game and that finished 1-1.

Burnley like their opponents have had a tough start to the season but apart from playing Nottingham Forest they have had to face the top seven sides and no other teams that may finish in the bottom half of the table, so it has been full on for Vincent Kompany’s side. The Clarets have lost two games in a row including defeats against Manchester United and Newcastle but have been working on defence conceding just three goals in those games. The Newcastle defeat was their latest and they lost 2-0 away from home at the weekend. Goals have been the main concern for the club so far with just four scored and two of those were in one game when they lost 5-2 against Tottenham.

Team News:

Luton: Ross Barkely has suffered a setback with his hamstring and looks like missing out again for this game. Albert Sambi-Lokonga is set to miss the next two months with a hamstring injury. Daniel Potts isn’t expected back until the end of November following an ankle injury. Gabriel Osho is out for at least another three weeks due to his knee injury. Jordan Clark remains sidelined with an ankle injury and isn’t due back for two months.

Burnley: Gudmundsson could be assessed for a recent muscle injury, Nathan Redmond and Benson Manuel are both out due to knocks and are not expected back for a couple of weeks. Darko Churilnov is out with illness, Hjalmar Ekdal is out long term with a knee injury. Michael Obafemi remains sidelined with a hamstring injury with no fixed return date. Lyle Foster returns frm suspension.

Luton vs Burnley Head to Head:

The sides last played each other here earlier this year in the Championship and Burnley won 1-0.

It’s been seven games since Luton have managed to beat Burnley.

The last five meetings in a row have all seen under 2.5 goals.

Luton vs Burnley Prediction:

Luton will be welcomed to a fantastic ovation from their home fans following their first win of the season and the players and manager will be riding on that high coming into this game. They will understand that Burnley have had their number for some time although a plethora of games during this period did end in draws. We expect to see a match that should feel like a cup game, both sides need the win and it is still at the early stages of the season so we expect to see some risks taken.

Burnley may concede possession at times and you can tell that the club's focus has been to look into their defence and try to keep it solid over the last few games. One market to look into is the over and under goals market. It recently favours under goals but we think that could change for this game as both teams will and really should go for victory here thus producing more chances and hopefully more goals. With Lyle Foster returning for Burnley, we feel that could give the away side the edge.
