Wolves vs Leeds: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League

Match Preview:

It’s fair to say that the middle part of the season has not been kind to Wolves after their positive start and they have slipped out of the top 10 as a result. However take note Nino Espirito Santo’s team have improved lately and come into this game with no defeats in their last three earning 7 points along the way.

This is an interesting game too as Wolves are in 12th and Leeds are in 11th and the away team are only 2 points to the advantage. Wolves beat Southampton 2-1 away from home in their last game in what was an impressive result for them and their fourth win on the road this season. At home it’s all levelled up for the club after 12 games with 4 wins, 4 defeats and 4 draws but a win rate of 33% at home simply isn’t going to do and in part that is why Wolves European qualification hopes are in danger. Depending on how many places are granted Wolves are around 7 points behind their target position but if they lose this, it will be another blow to those chances.

Leeds have lost 2 of their last three games but their objective of staying up was achieved weeks ago, together with pulling off some impressive results Leeds could claim that this season has been a success for them. You get the sense though that manager Marcelo Bielsa would love his club in their first season in the top flight since 2004 to finish in the top half of the table. Last weekend Leeds conceded 4 goals as they lost 4-2 against Arsenal. On the face of it we can see a bad defeat but what was impressive was how at 4-0 Leeds came back into the game. True one could claim that at 4 up Arsenal had simply taken their foot off the gas but Leeds played as if the game was 0-0 and got 2 goals back. That emphasised their fighting spirit this season.

Leeds have earned more points away from home (18) than at home, which is so far (14). The club have won 3 of their last five away games and the teams they have beaten were Leicester, Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion. Leicester stands out as the most impressive given that the side are currently in 3rd place. Leeds then are not the most predictable of teams to back, they absolutely have the team to beat most teams away if they can get the ball to the likes of Patrick Bamford and dictate the pace of the game. The defeat against Arsenal was mostly down to pace and the bullish nature of the Gunners, which has been missing from their set-up for the majority of the season, that would have taken Leeds by surprise.

Team News:

Wolves: Willy Boly is getting better after his hamstring injury but is expected at least to miss this game for the time being. Daniel Podence has a muscle injury and is expected to return soon but looks set to miss out here. Raul Jimenez is out long term with his head injury.

Leeds: Diego Llorente is being tipped to return next week but has been ruled out of this game. Kalvin Phillips is 50/50 to return from his calf injury and could face a late assessment. An update on Robin Koch who has missed a few months due to his knee injury is that he could be back at the beginning of next month. There is no news on Rodrigo who has missed the last two weeks with a muscle injury and is set to be ruled out yet again.

Wolves vs Leeds Head to Head:

Wolves have won the last 4 meetings between the sides.

Wolves vs Leeds Prediction:

In some ways we are looking at two different teams who have similarities. Wolves, even after a few seasons in the Premier League, can be that young, attacking, fresh team. And then there is Leeds who have proven to be all that since this campaign started last September.

Wolves have a good record against Leeds and are at home and they are finding their form again, all of this is positive and points to a possible home victory, and this is what we will be backing, with the draw covered on the refund. But we have to be honest in this assessment and believe that this is a result that is not clear. One could see Wolves win 3-0 and Leeds do the same. The early exchanges will be pivotal to the outcome. But what we should see is a very exciting game and end to end play, we have two teams who rarely give up the chase and it is of course Santo vs Bielsa. Everyone who loves Premier League football will be looking forward to this match and there should be a good few stories emerging from it.
