West Ham vs Wolves: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 17th December 2023
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: London Stadium

Match Preview:

West Ham’s recent good form was quashed last weekend as they travelled to Fulham and were soundly beaten 5-0. That was a wake up call but the club responded well by winning their Europa League group as they beat German team Frieburg 2-0 in midweek. This has been the story of David Moyes as manager for the Hammers, he has come under criticism at times but his sides have been able to pull off results just at boiling point which no fan can really complain about. The Hammers come into this game in 9th place and could move up two places with victory here depending on other results. Recent form has been good despite last weekend's whitewash and that includes having won three of their last five games.

Wolves are in 13th place with 19 points and they have the chance to reduce the gap to West Ham by just two points. The club have had a solid if unspectacular season so far but they are unbeaten in their last two games with a victory over Burnley and a draw against Nottingham Forest last weekend. Away form has seen seven points earned from 24 but recent away displays have not been good and they have lost their last 3. One of these games was a close 2-1 loss against Arsenal which can be expected but let’s take note that they have recently been defeated on the road against Fulham and Sheffield United.

Team News:

West Ham: Michail Antonio remains a doubt to be ready for this game as he recovers from a knee injury. Edson Alvarez had a slight hip injury and he will be assessed, but it isn’t thought to be serious.

Wolves: Rayan Ait-Nouri could return after facing a spell on the sidelines from an ankle injury and will be assessed. Jonny is unavailable. Joseph Hodge is out for another month due to a shoulder injury. Pedro Neto is not expected back until next week due to a hamstring injury.

West Ham vs Wolves Head to Head:

Last season in this fixture West Ham won 2-0.

West Ham have won the last 3 meetings when at home and it’s been 3 years since Wolves won here.

The last 4 meetings in a row have all seen under 2.5 goals.

West Ham vs Wolves Prediction:

Wolves of course didn’t have to play in midweek and sometimes that can be an advantage. But for West Ham they played at home so no travel and they also won so it returns to them that winning feeling and they have a good chance to continue that at the weekend. There are goals in this West Ham side and that is what remains important, of course the Hammers do not have the best home record in the league and in fact their away form is slightly better, but they have won here three times from seven games which is their majority result. Recent games over Wolves have seen some good wins here, so we can see the Hammers winning their 8th game of the season.

Wolves have been too inconsistent so far but are only five points adrift of West Ham but 10 from any European places next season which would be the dream for the club. Certainly the club can put in a shift but recent away form does not give us much hope and it may be best to stick with the home side who are a decent price.
