West Ham vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 4th May 2019
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Olympic Stadium

Match Preview:

West Ham’s season did look like it was going to end the way it started with a poor set of results but they have more than made up for that by beating Tottenham 1-0 away from home in their last match, and becoming the first team to beat them in their new stadium. West Ham did the very same thing to Arsenal a decade ago, it remains to be seen if that result will spur the team on to get maximum points in their final two games.

The Hammers last home match ended in a 2-2 draw with Leicester but since they were winning, this was not seen as a good result. However recent home form has yielded 10 points from 15 and they have lost just 1 game here in their last five.

West Ham are in 11th position and may not rise any higher given that they are 4 points behind 10th placed Watford.

Southampton are finally safe and come into this game having back to back draws against Bournemouth and Watford. The Saints have lost just 1 game away from home from their last five and overall that record is 10 from 18. But they have significantly improved since the arrival of Ralph Hasenhuttl and have become incredibly difficult to beat.

Team News:

West Ham: There are no new injuries for The Hammers coming into this game but long term ones remain including Andy Carroll, Andriy Yarmolenko and Winston Reid

Southampton: Michael Obafemi is ruled out for the season with a hamstring injury. Jannick Vestergaard is also out for the season with a muscle injury. Maya Yoshida is out with illness

West Ham vs Southampton Head to Head:

West Ham beat Southampton 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Last season West Ham won this fixture fairly easily in a 3-0 win.

The last 6 meetings when West Ham have been at home have all ended in over 2.5 goals.

West Ham vs Southampton Prediction:

There isn’t much between the teams in term of quality but The Hammers have played some good football in recent weeks. For example even when they lost to Manchester United they were the better team. Recently though they seem to be playing more freely away from home and one of those factors is because the home fans can become impatient very early on. Our bet then will concentrate on goalscorers and some history and we don’t want to ignore the fact that over 2.5 goals has been so successful. The teams are not playing for anything, so that could mean more open play and perhaps a game that both sets of players can just enjoy.

West Ham vs Southampton Betting Tips:

Over 2.5 goals at 1.62

Anytime goalscorer: Felipe Anderson at 3.00

Anytime goalscorer: Shane Long at 3.00
