Venue: Olympic Stadium
Match Preview:
There’s no doubt that the mood in the West Ham camp is better than it was a few weeks ago and it seems like the recent international break has helped Manuel Pellegrini’s team.
The Chilean put in the work over the near two week break to ensure more training, more drills and for the players to understand his methods and it has so far worked. From having no points after 4 games they now have 4 points after six games after beating Everton away 3-1 and then drawing 0-0 against Chelsea. The Hammers are up and running and there is a drive and confidence within the team now. The club also destroyed Maccessfield 8-0 in the Carabao Cup in midweek, a game that would have been a potential banana skin in seasons gone by.
The same cannot be said of Manchester United. A speedbump in a cul-de-sac with wins over Burnley and Watford followed a disappointing draw at home to Wolves and then they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup against Derby on penalties. It probably hurt more for the hierachy that it happened at home but that’s already one cup dropped from United’s season so far.
The other news that has dominated this week is manager Jose Mourinho and World Cup winner Paul Pogba’s exchange of words, which was caught on camera. There has been tension between player and manager for some time and Mourinho has even dropped Pogba as vice captain. There is a circus feel at the club that were so tight and reigned in under Sir Alex Ferguson and this situation can’t be good for team spirit and morale.
Team News:
West Ham: Marko Arnautovic has missed the last few games with a knee injury but he will be assessed ahead of this game as it is not a serious injury. Carlos Sanchez suffered a knock in midweek and Jack Wilshire’s return has been put back to early October
Manchester United: Second goalkeeper Sergio Romero has a 1 game suspension after being sent off in the Carabao Cup in midweek
