England Premier League
Sunday 7th May 2023
Kick off at 7pm BST
Venue: London Stadium
Match Preview:
West Ham are almost safe but not quite there and they will need another win before the end of the season to confirm that. The game at the weekend will be a difficult one for the club and against Manchester United they have traditionally found it very tough going and despite being at home will be the underdogs to win this one.
The Hammers are in 15th place with 34 points and the good news is that whatever happens at the weekend they cannot be overtaken as they have a four point lead over 16th placed Leicester. Form for David Moyes side will be a worry though as they have lost their last 3 with defeats against Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Manchester City. The side have also been leaking goals lately and in those three losses have shipped 9 goals. Their last game against City will not have affected the club with the form the champions are on but they will want to get back on track at home.
Manchester United have had shaky form with 4 points won from their last 9 and their top four hopes while still solid for now have also taken a dent. They were shocked away to Brighton in midweek not so much by the loss but the way it happened to a 99th minute penalty. With Liverpool in 5th finding form at the right time the Reds are only four points behind although Erik ten Hag’s side have played a game less and United for now remains the favourite to finish in the top four. Recent away form has been worrying with 3 defeats from their last five and even though they have won seven games this season on the road they have also lost seven. United would go above Newcastle if the Magpies were to lose on the same day against Arsenal and United win this game.
Team News:
West Ham: The club were affected by an illness in midweek and Nayef Aguerd, Declan Rice Tomas Soucek will all be assessed to see if they can come back after missing out on their last game. Kurt Zouma will miss out due to an ankle injury. Vladimir Coufal has an hamstring injury and has been ruled out.
Manchester United: Raphael Varane misses out again due to his foot injury but could return next week. Scott McTominay is out for two weeks with a knock and Alejandro Garnacho is being tipped to return after fitness issues.
West Ham vs Man Utd Head to Head:
Last season Manchester United won 2-1.
Manchester United have won 7 of the last 8 meetings.
It’s been over 3 years since West Ham beat Manchester United in the league at home.
3 of the last four meetings have seen under 1.5 goals.
West Ham vs Man Utd Prediction:
West Ham have shown some progress in their play of late, especially in their attacking play and yet they have lost their last 3 games, so that doesn’t add up. The problem with the club is that under Moyes they seem to keep coming up short against the very best sides and we think they will do so again. You also have to factor in one of the clubs biggest games in their history is coming up next week as they try to reach the Europa Conference League final. It is being played down for now, but it would be hugely significant for a club to have the chance to win a trophy as their last one was 43 years ago.
Manchester United are not just going through the motions and are playing for something and need to bounce back from their midweek defeat against Brighton as their top four hopes are in genuine danger, they have the quality to win this game but many will be asking what version of the club will turn up? Expect a close game.
