Match Preview:
West Ham come into this game with the news that manager David Moyes will be stepping down at the end of the season. Moyes and West Ham had their fair share of ups and downs but the last month has been hard on the club who could end up slipping even further down the table. For most of the season the Hammers looked a shoe in for a European finish but have dropped to 9th place as a consequence of no wins in their last four games. West Ham won’t finish in a European place now there are too many teams who have recently gone past them and their defence has become very leaky of late. The Hammers shipped 5 against Chelsea and 5 against Crystal Palace. The 5-0 defeat against Chelsea was West Ham’s latest game but they should be happy to return home against a bottom three side. The club has lost four games at home which isn’t the worst record but their majority result here has been the draw with 8 so far, that includes four of their last five games.
Luton will be relegated if they lose this game because of the goal difference to Nottingham Forest so they have to give it their all. However the Hatters have managed just 1 point from their last four games and their last win came against Bournemouth over a month ago. In midweek they could only draw 1-1 at home to Everton and on the road the club has the second to worst record with just 2 wins so far and 12 losses from 18 games. Rob Edwards side have lost their last five away games in a row and conceded 15 goals in that time.
Team News:
West Ham: Kalvin Phillips is only 50/50 to make the game due to a knock and will be assessed. Nayef Aguerd looks set to miss out with an ongoing ankle injury
Luton: Chiedozie Ogbene is 50/50 to return but may not be risked with his hamstring injury. Daniel Potts is in the same boat. There are long term injuries for Marvelous Nakamba, Issa Kabore, Tom Lockyer, Jacob Brown and Amarii Bell
West Ham vs Luton Head to Head:
The clubs have not met when West Ham have been at home in 30 years and even then of course West Ham were playing in a different stadium. This was in the FA Cup which finished 0-0, Luton won the replay.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture West Ham managed a 2-1 win.
West Ham vs Luton Prediction:
Sometimes when the announcement that a manager is leaving it can have a negative effect with the players but you get the sense that both players and fans will be happy with the news that Moyes is leaving. We expect to see a decent performance for Moyes last home game and at the end of the day if the Hammers can play like they should be, more attacking football we don’t see much of a chance for Luton to do much. All of the pressure is on Luton and much like their fellow strugglers Burnley they don’t seem to be able to pull out the results when most needed. Luton could not beat an Everton side at home for example when Everton had already assured their safety. It feels like a stretch to think that the Hatters will get anything here and we are opting for a solid Hammers victory.
