West Ham vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 3rd April 2022
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: London Stadium

Match Preview:

West Ham will still feel that they have a chance for a top 4 finish but it looks incredibly slim now given they have fallen six points behind their target. But that is only half of the problem for David Moyes side as they have also played two games more than the current 4th placed team Arsenal. Any dropped points here and it would feel like a confirmation that the Hammers would not be in the hunt for 4th place.

Still one has to wonder if West Ham don’t have bigger fish to fry as next week the club will play in the quarter finals of the Europa League against Lyon and that will be on the players mind heading into this game. One could argue that the Hammers would have preferred this game to have taken place on Saturday instead of Sunday.

Form for Moyes team is decent but with two defeats from their last four games vital points have been lost just at the wrong time. The Hammers last game ended in a 3-1 defeat against Tottenham, which felt like a blow given that Tottenham are a direct rival for 4th place. There are encouraging signs at home though and the Hammers have gone their last 4 games undefeated and won their last two.

Everton are 23 points behind their hosts and in 17th place and the Toffees ended a 4 game losing run by beating Newcastle 1-0 just before the international break. It was a huge win for Frank Lampard’s side and moved them 3 points clear of the bottom three. By the time this game comes around the club will know if Watford and Burnley have lost on the Saturday- they play Liverpool and Manchester City respectively and are heavily favoured to lose so winning this game for Everton could open up a significant gap. In short though Everton’s survival is far from guaranteed and every league game will feel like a cup final.

Talking of the cup Everton were recently knocked out of the FA Cup and in humbling style as they lost 4-0 against Crystal Palace. The key fact apart from a desperate display once they conceded the first goal is that the game was away from home. Everton have been incredibly poor on the road this season and so far Lampard has not been able to address that. The Toffees have won just once so far on the road.

Team News:

West Ham: Jarrod Bowen has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and is only 50/50 to return for this game it is the same situation for Vladimir Coufal.

Everton: Allan is suspended as he is serving his ban for his red card vs Newcastle. Fabian Delph has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness, he could be assessed but is likely to return next week. Yerry Mina is still out with a thigh injury and not expected back for another two weeks. Andros Townsend is out for the season after his knee injury obtained in the FA Cup game against Crystal Palace.

West Ham vs Everton Head to Head:

Everton have only lost one game away to West Ham in the last 7 meetings.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture West Ham won 1-0.

The last 3 meetings have ended in the same correct score of 1-0. Two wins for West Ham and one for Everton.

In the last 35 meetings there has only been one game that finished 0-0.

West Ham vs Everton Prediction:

In general Everton get good results over West Ham but that tide seems to have changed over the las few years and even though Everton have come away from London undefeated at times they haven’t always been wins. West Ham have had far the better season than the Toffees and on paper have the better team. The Hammers need the points here to remain in contention for a European finish but of course the Lyon game will be on their minds and maybe the Hammers will not be 100% focused.

Everton have to be, and even a point will not be too bad if their two rivals for relegation have lost on the Saturday. But Everton’s away form is dismal, can they correct that? A win here would be huge for the club and it would finally feel as if the ship had cleared a storm. Everton are a great price to win, and if the Hammers have that Europa League game looming then could the value be on the away win? We're not convinced, Everton simply can't be trusted away from home, so we'll go for a home win.
