England Premier League
Sunday 20th August 2023
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: London Stadium
Match Preview:
This will be an early season fiery derby as West Ham prepare to play their first home game of the season. Last weekend they drew 1-1 away to Bournemouth, not a terrible result but they were leading. In the transfer market there has been some good news for David Moyes' side who seemed to be getting nowhere with signings after selling Declan Rice. In has come Edson Alvarez from Ajax and a more familiar face to the Premier League is the arrival of James Ward-Prowse so now we know who will be taking the free kicks.
There has been a lot of news about the future of Lucas Paqueta with Manchester City showing interest however news has emerged that the FA may charge the Brazilian over alleged bets made on matches. This is a developing story but could be a huge blow for the Hammers in the long term.
Chelsea started their campaign with a tough 1-1 draw over Liverpool at home, never an easy team to play in your first game. On the transfer front it seems no club outside of Europe can compete with them and they have spent over £300m this summer. Half of that has been spent in the last week with the signings of Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Romeo Lavia from Southampton. Caicedo’s transfer broke the British transfer fee and Lavia has come for a cool £53m.
Team News:
West Ham: The Hammers only have one injury concern which is new signing Edson Alvarez who has fitness issues and looks set to miss out once again.
Chelsea: The Blues have a host of players out all with no fixed return dates and that includes Christopher Nkunku, Wesley Fofana, Armando Broja, Trevoh Chabolah, Benoit Badiashile and Marcus Bettinelli.
West Ham vs Chelsea Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 1-1.
It’s been 3 games and no wins for West Ham either home or away.

West Ham vs Chelsea Prediction:
Normally one could look at Chelsea’s injury list and say that this must mean advantage to West Ham who apart from one new signing have a clean bill of health. The problem though is that Chelsea have one of the biggest overall squads in the Premier League and they have plenty of quality to boot. They are in a position that when new signing Christopher Nkunku picked up an injury they were able to splash over £150m on two new players, however of course Pochettino will need the new players to click.
West Ham will be solid but the worry is if they don’t start well their home fans can start to put the pressure on which of course can quickly have a negative effect. We are going to take on Chelsea here, there just seems to be a lot of noise at West Ham and that may have affected some players in the run up to this game. Chelsea boast genuine quality, they did last season but Pochettino has been tasked with honing that in and making the side the force that they should be. There is a gulf between the clubs and Chelsea have not always been able to show that in recent times, we think the tide could change. Of course with it being so early in the season there is a risk but at the same time the Blues are very good value to get the win with the quality they have.
