West Ham vs Brighton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 21st August 2022
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: London Stadium

Match Preview:

It’s not been a good start for West Ham so they will be looking to bounce back and win this game. Being that they are at home, if they were to go 3 games without a win the fans may start showing concern, but of course Brighton are good opposition and this will not be easy for the Hammers.

David Moyes side started the season with a defeat against Manchester City but the concern will be losing to newly promoted Nottingham Forest in the following week. The Hammers did have chances to come away with at least a draw and maybe the timing was just wrong given this was Forest’s first home game in the top flight in 23 years, so huge motivation would have been there for Steve Cooper’s side.

So after two games West Ham are 19th with no goals scored but they did win in midweek beating Viborg in the Europa Conference League qualifying 1st leg. It was indeed an expected win but a vital one too and manager Moyes will be hoping that result can be a springboard here.

Brighton are unbeaten after beating Manchester United 2-1 away from home and then drawing against Newcastle 0-0 at home. Both results are fantastic given how strong Newcastle could be this season and let’s not forget that Graham Potter’s side only let 1 shot on target for the Magpies and created seven themselves. Brighton mean business and their target this season will be to finish in a European place.

Team News:

West Ham: Craig Dawson is only 50/50 to return with a thigh injury, Angelo Ogbonna is nearing a return but probably won’t do so until the end of the month after his long term lay off. Nayef Aguerd is out long term with an ankle injury.

Brighton: The club has no new injuries to their first team squad heading into this game.

West Ham vs Brighton Head to Head:

The clubs have played each other 57 times and neither side holds a majority win rate. Indeed with 20 draws that is the most common result.

Last season this fixture finished 1-1, 6 of the last seven meetings has finished in a draw.

It’s been 11 games and 10 years since West Ham beat Brighton.

For the last seven meetings both teams have scored.

West Ham vs Brighton Prediction:

West Ham will be the favourites to win but we expect this to be a very difficult game for the Hammers. It was very good that new signing Gianluca Scamacca opened his account for the club in Europe and he needs more game time and it will be interesting to see if he can get the goals for the club this season.

Brighton have been nothing short of impressive so far and the Hammers will have to put in an incredible shift to win this game. The problem is that Potter’s side can be relentless and very physical and West Ham had to play in midweek whilst they did not.

West Ham have the quality to win this game of course but Brighton have looked like a bogey side for the Hammers for some time, but with home advantage and a midweek win under their belts, West Ham should be able to get something from this encounter.
