West Ham vs Aston Villa: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Venue: London Stadium

Match Preview:

David Moyes' job is still under threat alongside his reputation after what has been a poor campaign for West Ham. However in Europe they are one game away from being in the quarter finals after they beat AEK Larnaca 2-0 in the 1st leg of the knock out round and that was away from home. Certainly the Hammers have made strides forward with Moyes in charge but they have also had desperate times in the league with consistency.

The Hammers are in the bottom three so really need a win here and in fact even a draw would take them out of the relegation zone for now. Recent form has been a mixed bag where they have picked up 5 points from 15 but they have also lost two of their last 3 games. It felt like a new low to lose 4-0 away to Brighton last weekend and although the Seagulls are the superior side the result was a bad one and the Hammers put in a poor display to boot. At home there are more encouraging signs to be had and Moyes team has gone their last 3 undefeated with two wins and a draw and they have recently beaten Everton and Nottingham Forest here.

Aston Villa are in 11th place and with 34 points it should be safe to say that Unai Emery’s side are going to be safe this season. The clubs recent back to back wins have paid huge dividents with victories over Everton and Crystal Palace and Villa’s survival will ultimately happen because on a consistant basis they were able to not only surprise teams but beat the ones around them. On the road Villa have lost 50% of their games and that is not the best record at this level and overall they have won 14 of 36 possible points, ultimately that will be enough to keep up the Villains.

Team News:

West Ham: Michail Antonio has a tight calf but will be assessed. Vladimir Coufal remains a doubt with a heel injury. Lukasz Fabianski remains sidelined with an eye injury and isn’t due back until next month. Lucas Paqueta is being tipped to return for this game follwing his calf injury.

Aston Villa: Philippe Coutinho is out with a hamstring injury and won’t return for at least 3 weeks. Leander Dendoncker is a serious doubt with his hand injury and will have to be assessed. Diego Carlos could return after a lengthy lay off but has fitness doubts. Boubacar Kamara has an ankle injury and is out for 2-3 weeks.

West Ham vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

Last season West Ham won this fixture 2-1.

West Ham have been able to win the last 5 meetings in a row.

It’s been almost 12 years since Aston Villa beat West Ham away from home.

West Ham vs Aston Villa Prediction:

West Ham are in a dangerous position but one has to wonder if facing Aston Villa at this time is perfect timing? The Hammers have a great record over Villa recently and although they faced travel in midweek you get the sense that the players will be raring to go in this game being at home.

West Ham have only won 1 game in their last five and that is easy to have little confidence in them and certainly Villa has the better form however at home recent form for the Hammers has been solid enough for us to have confidence that they can pick up all 3 points on Sunday against a tricky opponent and are great to value.

Keep an eye out for Pablo Fornals, granted he hasn’t had a good season for the Hammers but has scored in the last 3 meetings against Aston Villa.
