West Brom vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 7th March 2021
Kick off at 12noon GMT
Venue: The Hawthorns

Match Preview:

The Baggies 1-0 loss against Everton in midweek was a body blow to a club fighting to stay up but this game is the big one for the club. Newcastle are currently in 17th place and every team in the bottom three has one eye on the Magpies - drop points and they can be reeled in.

West Brom’s chances of survival are slim but they will probably be non-existant if they lose this game, a draw will not suit them either, on Sunday it is time to stand up and be counted. If Sam Allardyce’s team were to win the game they would be just six points from safety. Brighton who have the same points as Newcastle play on Saturday so that is another club where West Brom will be hoping to drop points at the weekend.

Recent form for the Baggies is good with 5 points earned from their last 12. It isn’t a great return but when you’re 19th you have to look at statistics differently. This match will actually be the clubs 3rd straight game at home, with a recent win and a defeat they will be hoping for another victory, which will be just their 4th of the season overall.

Newcastle have no wins in their last three matches. Last weekend they drew 1-1 with Wolves and perhaps they have the added advantage of having a weeks rest over the opponents who had to play in midweek. Away from home recent form is poor for Steve Bruce’s team who have lost 4 of their last 5 games. Their only win in-between coming against Everton five weeks ago.

Team News:

West Bromwich Albion: Kieran Gibbs is still out with his neck injury, he is the only injury concern for the Baggies.

Newcastle: Miguel Almiron has a knee injury picked up in the clubs last game and he has been ruled out for at least four weeks. Allan Saint-Maximin has a groin injury and he is set to miss the rest of the month. Callum Wilson won’t be back for another 2 weeks at the earliest. Fernandez, Isaac Hayden and Emil Krafth are all in line to return from injuries. Fabian Schar isn’t due back for another month due to a knee injury.

West Brom vs Newcastle Head to Head:

The team haven’t met at this ground in the league since 2017 and that game finished 2-2.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Newcastle won 2-1.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

West Brom vs Newcastle Prediction:

West Brom have improved and even in their loss against Everton they showed a lot of strength. The players seem to be reacting to Allardyce’s methods and there is no question that they have improved. One has to wonder if it’s too late though and really a positive reaction was needed back in December when he got the job.

Newcastle look a concern but they have remained a club who can pluck out a couple of wins every 8 games or so which keeps them in the safety zone. But the big worry for the club is the amount of quality players they are losing to injury. Not only are those players missing on the pitch but also it will dampen spirits inside the squad for this to keep on happening.

It’s going to be a very tight game we suspect but the possibility of a home win is on the cards. For any neutrals out there the home victory would make for an exciting end to the season in the bottom three. West Brom are working really hard now, and could well take something from this game.
