England Premier League
Saturday 2nd January 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: The Hawthorns
Match Preview:
Sam Allardyce is waiting for his first win as West Bromwich Albion manager and so far despite claiming a fantastic draw at Liverpool it hasn’t been a great beginning for Allardyce. Results under him have seen Albion lose 3-0 to Aston Villa in the derby and 5-0 at home to Leeds and the Baggies remain among the favourites to be relegated.
West Brom are 5 points from safety and in 19th place and have won just once so far. Recent form is following a loss draw pattern and they have lost their last 3 games in a row at home, conceding 13 times in that period.
Are Arsenal’s fortunes changing? After taking seven weeks to win a match in the league the Gunners ended the year by winning their last two games in a row. First it was unlikely victory over Chelsea by 3-1 and that was followed up by a more conservative win over Brighton winning 1-0. This match will be Arsenal’s second in a row away from home.
On the road the Gunners have lost 50% of their games and have scored just seven goals so far. A win could see Arsenal move up one place but would set the club up to have a strong January and try to recover their season. Currently Mikel Arteta’s team are 9 points from a top 4 finish.
Team News:
West Bromwich Albion: Sam Field will face a late test and is only 50/50 after fitness issues. Kieran Gibbs is a doubt but will be assessed after his thigh injury. Jake Livermore is suspended
Arsenal: Gabriel is ruled out because of Covid-19. David Luiz is in line to return after illness. Reiss Nelson is being pencilled in to return for this game. Thomas Partey is due back in 2 weeks time from his thigh injury
West Brom vs Arsenal Head to Head:
The last time the clubs played in the league was back in 2017 and this fixture ended 1-1.
It’s been 4 games at West Brom since Arsenal have won here and we would have to go back to 2014.
There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
West Brom vs Arsenal Prediction:
Sam Allardyce has been left frustrated by his side because his tactic is a simple one but which requires focus and some luck. That is how long can his side hang out for a 0-0 and then counter? However in each of Allardyce’s 3 games so far the opposition has scored first which has hampered the teams set up and plan.
It’s possible that West Brom may start with a more attack minded game and try to take some of it to Arsenal. But we expect the away side to be able to soak up any early pressure and Arsenal despite their obvious set backs this season possess enough quality to get the win at the weekend.
Arsenal do not have a great recent record at West Brom, but the Allardyce magic isn’t rubbing off just yet and the Gunners come here in good form and with a boost of confidence also.
