Match Preview:
Watford could well be one of the clubs down in the bottom three come the end of the season so every win is gold to them and they would have been relived last weekend as they overcame Norwich 3-1. That win has moved the club up to 11th place with six points and more importantly it ended a run of 3 defeats in a row.
However the Hornets were reminded of their limitations even if some changes were rung in their midweek EFL Cup clash with Stoke, which they lost 3-1. From a fans perspective the defeat and ones like these are always a blow, and deep cup runs can be a lot of fun, but that is one cup chance over for the club.
At least Watford have been more impressive than Newcastle though and the Magpies continue to struggle this season with manager Steve Bruce under increasing pressure. Newcastle are in 18th place with no wins and last weekend they drew 1-1 at home to Leeds. On the road it’s two defeats coming against Aston Villa and Manchester United and in those games they conceded 6 goals.
Newcastle have played some good football even against Manchester United they did have their moments but like Watford it is finding that time when they are going to click and try to go on a run. For both clubs this is a worry. But the Hornets presently are in pole position between the two teams.
Team News:
Watford: Daniel Bachmann is a doubt with a knee injury but will be assessed. Joao Pedro could return after a lack of match fitness.
Newcastle: There has been no update on Callum Wilson’s thigh injury so it is very likely he will miss this game too. Jonjo Shelvey has been pencilled in to return for this game but remains a doubt. Freddie Woodman will have a late test with his muscle injury which kept him out of the last game.

This match looks like being the closest in the Premier League weekend. Both sides are very equal and will probably finish very close to one another come the seasons end.
Some would suggest there is an advantage for Watford being at home and it is clear that the Magpies have struggled of late. But if we analyse Newcastle’s game we do believe they have improved slightly over the weeks. They have drawn 2 of their last 3 games and even the 4-1 defeat at Manchester United glossed over the fact that Newcastle really did play their part.
It is a risk of course but the Magpies are a great price to win this game and for minimum stakes we think they should be followed on the handicap.
