England Premier League
Tuesday 21st July 2020
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: Vicarage Road
Match Preview:
This match is really not as clear cut as some people would have it. Yes Manchester City have the quality to come here and win big, but at the end of the day what City have been doing at home recently and how they have been performing in general away are two different things.
Watford will want the 3 points despite the reputation of City but at home they have been very average indeed. Though no one will forget that it was here where they inflicted Liverpool’s first defeat of the season beating the then soon to be champions 3-0. It was a stunning result which may be in the back of the minds of some of the players for this game.
After getting knocked out of the FA Cup at the weekend, Manchester City’s focus now is on the Champions League and whilst manager Pep Guardiola is infamous for fielding his best 11 players even for ‘dead rubber’ games, maybe he should take the advice of other managers who would be giving the youngsters a chance. Imagine for example if one or two of his key players get injured now and have to miss the crucial Champions League game against Real Madrid.
Losing 7 games away from home is what has hampered City’s season, it is just too many games when you are trying to defend your league title. At one point the club had lost 3 in a row which is unlike City and indeed any team that Guardiola has coached. But there is no certainty here that they will walk away with a win.
Team News:
Watford: Capoue, Deulofeu, Janmaat, and Success are all unavailable for this game. Foulquier is a doubt.
Manchester City: Man City have no new injury concerns. Sergio remains out with a knee injury.
Watford vs Man City Head to Head:
Watford will not forget the match earlier in the season against City when they were destroyed 8-0 at the Etihad.
This fixture last season ended 2-1 to Manchester City.
The teams infamously faced each other in last seasons FA Cup final where Manchester City put on a supreme show and beat Watford 6-0.
Manchester City have scored 33 goals against Watford in just the last seven meetings.
Manchester City have won the last 12 meetings in a row against Watford the last time the Hornets took any points from City was back in 2007 at this ground when the game ended 1-1.
Watford vs Man City Prediction:
So Watford usually get slaughtered by City and that is a fact but as the season has been over for City for some time we should also remember that there have been a few games down the line when Watford have been at home and have lost by just 1 goal. If we are chasing value this could be a good bet to back the home side on the handicap, however Man City will have a point to prove after their FA Cup exit. Check the team news first to see if Pep will go against the grain and drop some of his stars, but if the side looks strong, we have to go with a City win, and most likely a few goals.
