Watford vs Burnley: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 30th April 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Vicarage Road

Match Preview:

The relegation game of the weekend will see Watford take on Burnley and while Watford look destined to play in the Championship next season their fate isn’t sealed just quite yet.

The Hornets are in 19th place with 22 points and are 9 points from safety although because of goal difference the gap is essentially 10 points. That gap is to their opponents in this game and so a win is absolutely necessary for Roy Hodgson’s side.

The problem for Watford is evident though and even if they won all of their remaining five games there would be no guarantee of staying up, and let’s not forget that the club have only won six games this season. Form coming into this match is poor with 4 defeats in a row coming against Brentford and Leeds. The other two losses were widely expected against Liverpool and Manchester City. At home the Hornets have the worst record in the league with just seven points won from a possible 48 and that includes losing 13 times. Home supporters have only witnessed their team score 13 goals and four of those were in one game against all of teams Manchester United.

The Burnley-Everton story is becoming an epic one and a nail biting one for both sets of supporters. True Leeds could get dragged into the battle but for now it seems one of Burnley and Everton are going down. Burnley are currently safe in 17th place with 31 points and have 2 more than Everton though the Clarets have played a game more. What a huge game this is for Burnley though to pile on the pressure for Everton and go 5 points clear as Everton do not play until Sunday. Burnley are finding form at the right time and on form the club would be in seventh place and have won 10 points from their last 15 and won their last two games in a row. Last weekend Burnley beat Wolves and their home form has improved. Away is still a problem though with just one game won so far which came back in February against Brighton.

Team News:

Watford: Femenia is expected to return after missing the last game with a knock. Cucho is out for 3-4 weeks with a hamstring injury. Samuel Kalu is 50/50 to return from an ankle injury and could be assessed. Francisco Sierralta is also 50/50 to make this game after his calf injury.

Burnley: Jay Rodriguez is expected to be fine after a slight calf injury. Maxwell Cornet is a doubt with his knee and is rated at 50/50. Ben Mee, Erik Pieters and Gundmundsson are out long term.

Watford vs Burnley Head to Head:

The last time the clubs played here in 2019 Burnley won 3-0.

It’s been 5 games since Watford beat Burnley home or away.

3 of the last four games has seen under 2.5 goals.

Watford vs Burnley Prediction:

The team in form are Burnley and many will stick with them to get the points against a poor Watford side. Watford look down but at the same time this really is the final game for them to try and survive and they are at home. But home has not been a happy hunting ground for the Hornets who have been very poor and have the worst home record in the league. However despite Burnley’s form improving their away form is poor, this is why the game could well be edgy and end in a draw.

Backing the draw isn’t for everyone but we don’t expect many goals in this game, Burnley will be after the win of course but a draw wouldn’t be a disaster, not away from home. Expect an intense game that could open up more in the second half.
