Watford vs Brentford: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 16th April 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Vicarage Road

Match Preview:

It’s been 21 defeats now for Watford and their fate does look sealed. But Roy Hodgson has never been one to give up and some belief would be installed in the clubs survival if they were to win this game at the weekend.

Watford are in 19th place with 22 points and are six points from safety which is really seven because of inferior goal difference. If that wasn’t enough of a mountain to climb the Hornets have also played a game more than both Everton and Burnley the two teams directly above them. There are 21 points left on the board for Watford but form coming into this game is not good with just 3 points earned from their last five games and they have lost 4 of those. The Hornets last match finished in a 3-0 loss at home to Leeds and they have conceded 5 goals without reply in their last two games.

Playing at home has been a real problem for the club who have the worst home form in the league earning just seven points from a possible 45. The fans have had to witness 12 defeats from 15 games played and they are conceding on average 2 goals per game.

Brentford are home and dry and have 36 points and are in 13th place. It has been no less than a fantastic achievement for a club who would have been the favourites to be relegated this season. In part their revival is down to Christian Eriksen who has had a quite astonishing return to football after almost dying last summer. He has led the team, assisted in goals and scored them, he is quite simply an inspiration.

The Bees are in great form and have won 4 of their last 5 games and they have hit their best form of the season just at the right time. On the road Thomas Frank’s side have lost 50% of their games and won just four however two of these victories have occurred in their last three games.

Team News:

Watford: Samuel Kalu has an ankle injury with no specified return date, Cucho is out with a hamstring injury and he could well miss the rest of the season although could be back for the final weekend. Francisco Sierralta is out with his calf injury.

Brentford: The only concern for the club is Frank Onyeka who is still out with an ankle injury with no fixed return date.

Watford vs Brentford Head to Head:

The last time the teams played this fixture was in 2020 in the Championship and that game finished 1-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Brentford won 2-1 and they have won the last two meetings against Watford.

Brentford have not beaten Watford away from home since 1977.

There is an 80% chance to see both teams to score.

Watford vs Brentford Prediction:

It would be easy to think that Brentford should be backed here, but perhaps we should have more caution. It is true that the one advantage that Watford have here is Brentford’s poor record at this ground but that’s it. Watford are in poor form and have a dreadful record here themselves but they have a lot to play for. It’s no good if they record some expected wins next month that has to happen now.

Brentford have been a breath of fresh air but at the same time how long can they keep up such good form and if they face a battling team up for the challenge it could well be too much for them. However unlike Watford, Brentford are playing with a certain freedom now, enjoying their football and this makes them very dangerous for a side who are bound to be a bit nervous defansively. We will back Brentford but cover the draw on the refund.
