England Premier League
Sunday 7th February 2021
Kick off at 12noon GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Match Preview:
It’s been a poor 10 days for Tottenham and a period which confirmed that the club will not be Premier League champions any time soon. Defeats have rained in from Liverpool, Brighton and Chelsea and the club have lost 3 consecutive games. Jose Mourinho has also lost in successive home matches for the first time in his career.
Off the pitch the Dele Alli saga continues, the player wanted a loan move to PSG, Mourinho wanted him out but club owner Daniel Levy blocked the deal. Then there is the case of Gareth Bale on loan from Real Madrid, the hero of yesteryear who has been relegated to the bench and didn’t even come on in a big game against Chelsea. How will Levy feel that a player who is held in high regard isn't getting game time when Spurs are paying £220,000 a week to have him at the club? One has to wonder if tensions are now building between manager and club owner and it wouldn’t be the first time this has happened to Mourinho in his career.
Tottenham have fallen to 8th place and are 7 points adrift of a top 4 spot but do have a game in hand over most of the clubs above them. Surely the basic of objective for the club this season is finishing in the top 4. Tottenham have won just once at home in their last five games, with only 4 wins from 11, and perhaps Mourinho is benefiting from no fans being allowed because the pressure would be ten fold with that kind of return.
West Bromwich Albion are 10 points from safety, in 19th place and in midweek they suffered a hammer blow losing 2-1 against bottom side Sheffield United, this was after going a goal up. The Blades have to play Chelsea this weekend so that is a tough match but it is getting to the point where West Brom could be bottom of the league very soon on this form.
The Baggies have lost 7 of their 11 away games and have the 2nd to worst away record in the league.
Team News:
Tottenham: Dele Alli will be assessed but will likely miss out due to his tendon. Harry Kane has an ankle injury but the club have received a boost and even though he will miss this game he should be back for the next one. Sergio Reguilon is out for at least another two weeks with a muscle injury. Giovani Lo Celso has the same problem and looks more long term.
West Bromwich Albion: The Baggies have no new injuries coming into this game.
Tottenham vs West Brom Head to Head:
The clubs have not played here since 2017 when this fixture ended 1-1.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Tottenham won 1-0.
6 of the last seven meetings in the league have finished with under 2.5 goals.
Tottenham vs West Brom Prediction:
Tottenham will be the favourites of course and there will be a lot of pressure on the side to win. A defeat could spell disaster for Mourinho. One of the problems the club has had lately is playing one striker up front at home and dropping Heung-Min Son slightly deeper. Any club that plays one up front at home is looking for a negative solid result in some way but you can’t win every game 1-0 or 2-0.
West Brom are under their own pressure and on paper this game could be a cricket score. Historically there are not many goals scored in this game but one would surely think that Tottenham will come out all guns blazing. Just what is going on behind the scenes we would all like to know. It feels as if Mourinho is losing the dressing room, if so this could be a difficult match for the home side. However, when you look at the difference in quality of both sides we will have to go with the home team, surely Tottenham will not lose 3 games at home in succession?
