Tottenham vs Watford: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 30th January 2019
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Wembley Stadium

Match Preview:

The Queen once referred to a Royal year as an annus horribilis and Tottenham have certainly had a week horribilis as they have exited both domestic cups and lost Harry Kane and Dele Alli to injury.

All of this seems to be coming at the wrong time for the club who have had another solid season but it looks like they will have very little to show for it.

Focus is needed and at least Son is back from international duty and the forward has been greatly missed. Tottenham are still 3rd and have a 4 point lead over Chelsea and their position is good enough to automatically qualify for next seasons Champions League. But the club are 9 points adrift of Liverpool so a league title looks faint and they have Manchester City sitting in between them just to add to good measure.

Form in the league has been average for the club where they have won 2 and lost 2 from their last four games. Perhaps what is telling is that on recent form the club would be 6th in the league where even Burnley have performed better.

Mauricio Pochettino will need a good reaction from his players given that the club have lost their last 2 games at Wembley following defeats against Wolves and Manchester United.

Watford are in 7th place and given that 6th place is 11 points away this is the best position that The Hornets could achieve this season. But even that is under pressure because there are no less than five teams within 3 points of them. The club have gone their last 4 games undefeated, however 3 of those have finished in draws and none of the teams faced in that time are in the top half of the standings.

On the road Watford have again been quite impressive and have won 8 points from their last 12 available. These include wins over Crystal Palace and West Ham.

Team News:

Tottenham: Son is back from international duty at the Asia Cup. Dele Alli is out until at least the beginning of March with a hamstring injury. Ben Davies will be assesed after his groin injury. Harry Kane is out until March with an ankle injury. Moussa Dembele has gone to play in the Chinese league joining Guangzhou

Watford: The only new injury concern is Femenia who has a hamstring injury and will not return until early Febuary

Tottenham vs Watford Head to Head:

The teams have played each other at Wembley already this season as they met in the Carabao Cup where Tottenham prevailed on penalties.

Last season Tottenham won this fixture 2-0.

From the last 12 fixtures Watford have just 1 victory over Tottenham.

Tottenham vs Watford Prediction:

What has been so impressive with Tottenham this season is that when the club have looked like being on the ropes they have made a comeback Rocky style, and it isn’t always easy on the eye, for example their last minute win at Fulham the other week. The club have Son back and we think as Tottenham’s No.1. player now he will take that with pride and can shine in this game, we will back him to get all three points for the home side and push on in the league. Watford are in good form but are not winning enough games and are not proving themselves away from home against the top sides. This could be too much of a step up for them even facing an injury hit Spurs side.
