Tottenham vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

Here are two teams who would have expected to be doing better than they are but run the risk of no Champions League football next season. Tottenham have gone from 1st place to trailing the league leaders by 9 points and those league leaders couldn’t have been any worse in their eyes given that it is Arsenal. Tottenham have fallen badly and collected just 1 point from their last 15 with four defeats in their last five games. That one point ironically came away at Manchester City in their epic 3-3 draw, but they seem to enjoy playing at the Etihad but at home recently they have been very poor having lost 3 games in a row. Those defeats have come against Chelsea, Aston Villa and in midweek West Ham came here and won despite going a goal down. Tottenham are in 5th place with 27 points and just three points shy of the top four but recent poor form has let in Manchester United, Newcastle and even Brighton who could all soon be taking over the club in the positions.

Newcastle when playing at home are a force to be reckoned with but away form has continued to be a misery for the club. In midweek they were soundly beaten 3-0 by Everton and a few weeks ago they went down 2-0 against Bournemouth on the road, indeed the Magpies have not won away from home since they throttled Sheffield United 8-0 back in September. The club has won 3 of their last five games but are suspect on the road but of course a top four finish is still on the cards. The problem for Eddie Howe’s side is a lack of consistency and dare we say it overall the club seem to have taken a step backwards compared to last season. Of course their injury list has not helped matters but Newcastle has a bigger budget compared to most teams in the league.

Team News:

Tottenham: Heung Min-Son has a knock but it isn’t sure if it is serious or not and he will be assessed. The following players remain out long term; Manor Soloman, Ashley Phillips, Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur. Ivan Perisic is out for the season.

Newcastle: Jamaal Lascelles has a dead leg and will be assessed, Sean Longstaff and Javier Manquillo could be assessed for this match but both remain doubts. Harvey Barens and Elliot Anderson are not due back for at least two weeks, Dan Burn could return in 3 weeks due to a back injury. Sven Botman, Matt Targett and Nick Pope are all out long term, Joseph Willock and Callum Wilson were being pencilled in to return this weekend but remain doubts and Sandro Tonali is suspended for the season.

Tottenham vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture 2-1.

Both teams to score has happened in the last seven meetings.

Newcastle have won just 3 games from the last 12 however they won both home and away last season.

Tottenham vs Newcastle Prediction:

This game has all the makings of being a very unpredictable one. Tottenham seem feeble lately especially at home where their defence can really be got at. However Newcastle have been very poor on the road but we think the Magpies will take heart from having won both games recently over Tottenham where they also scored 8 goals. Eddie Howe has to stop the rot away from home and Tottenham have to do the same thing at home, so 0-0 it is then. Except these two teams usually even in defeat know how to score goals and we expect that trend to continue at the weekend, but we will be backing Newcastle in a game that could overspill and get quite physical.
