Tottenham vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 2nd February 2019
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: Wembley Stadium

Match Preview:

The midweek matches took their toll on all of the top Premier League sides except two, Arsenal and Tottenham, who really benefited from surprise results.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain in 3rd place but what is significant is that they made up 2 points on league leaders Liverpool. They are also only two points adrift of Manchester City and have opened up a 7 point gap to 4th.

Tottenham have shown superb mental strength this season and did so again on Wednesday night when they were trailing against Watford. With 10 minutes to go it looked like being a 7th defeat for the club but returning forward Son equalised and Fernando Llorente scored the winner to secure all three points.

Spurs’ form is improving now despite key injuries and they have won 3 of their last 4 league games. This result was massive and they have the added advantage of staying in London for another fixture.

Newcastle caused a shock by coming back from a goal down to beat Manchester City 2-1 and in the process help Liverpool extend their lead at the top to five points.

The Magpies have now won back to back games and will come here with a lot of confidence. The win has moved Rafa Benitez’s team to 14th and they have gone 5 points clear of the relegation zone.

Still Newcastle do tend to struggle away from home where they have won just 2 matches all season. Almost half of their games have ended in draws and they have no wins on the road since their victory over Huddersfield before Christmas.

Team News:

Tottenham: Ben Davies is the clubs only short term injury worry. He was due back in the match v Watford but has suffered a small setback with his groin but will be assessed ahead of this game

Newcastle: Karl Darlow could return after his arm injury but remains 50/50. Joselu has an ankle injury and could miss the next few weeks he is certainly out of this game

Tottenham vs Newcastle Head to Head:

In the reverse fixture Tottenham won 2-1.

Tottenham have won the last 3 meetings.

The last time Newcastle beat Tottenham in London was in 2015.

Tottenham vs Newcastle Prediction:

Tottenham are suffering from some key injuries to the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, because of this Pochettino had to revert to having 5 in midfield and that gamble paid off in the last game. Tottenham are still a brilliant attacking side though and we shouldn’t forget that they had 17 attempts on goal against Watford. With both Liverpool and Manchester City slipping up there is a renewed optimism at the club and so they will be favourites to win this game.

Newcastle did well in beating City but there are still question marks if this side can pull off 3 wins in a row in the league and also their away form is average at best. It would just be like Newcastle to beat the champions but not the team in 3rd place. This is a long trip for the club and we expect them to lose this game.

Tottenham vs Newcastle Betting Tips:
