England Premier League
Saturday 30th October 2021
Kick off at 5:30pm BST
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Match Preview:
This will be the 196th meeting between these two famous teams and like most of the fixtures before them will be richly anticipated.
Tottenham have mixed form that includes 3 losses in their last five although sandwiched in between they have managed to beat Aston Villa and Newcastle. However Spurs were beaten last weekend by West Ham in a very tight derby that finished 1-0 to the Hammers.
There was some joy back at the club though after knocking out Burnley in the EFL Cup to reach the quarter finals, with no major trophies for Tottenham in 14 years a deep cup run will be welcomed.
Manchester United are in 7th place and just one point behind their hosts so this is very evenly poised. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under real pressure now as United have gone their last 4 games without victory in the league. Last weekend the theatre of dreams was turned into the theatre of nightmares as United were smashed 5-0 at home to their bitter rivals Liverpool. It was a damning and almost justifiable result given the work that has gone into making this current Liverpool side so strong against the back drop of glittering moments at United with no solid consistency.
The media talked and talked about the records that fell including United not losing 5-0 at home since 1955 and that Solskjaer was surely going to be sacked. But more worryingly the bigger picture also revealed that United had conceded 9 goals in their last two games. It has also been underlined that even though Ronaldo is box office and can get this side out of trouble, he can’t do it and be expected to do it every week, something is amiss at the club and the buck is always going to stop with Solskjaer.
Manchester United’s last victory came away at West Ham six weeks ago however it is worth noting that United have only lost once on the road this season and indeed only once on their travels in the past 18 months.
The Red Devils come into this encounter in 7th place and are 8 points from the top, a possible surprise league title isn’t over but with the quality in front of them it certainly feels like it is. A top 4 finish has to be the objective. Victory at the weekend could see United climb at least two places and of course past Tottenham.
Team News:
Tottenham: Bryan Gil has recovered from his hamstring injury and is being pencilled in to return for this game, although will have to be assessed first. Ryan Sessegon is still out with a knock.
Manchester United: Paul Pogba is suspended after his red card last weekend. Anthony Martial has a slight knock but is being tipped to be fine to be included in the squad. Raphael Varane has made a speedy recovery from his thigh injury though will face a late test and is only 50/50 to make this game.
Tottenham vs Man Utd Head to Head:

The last four meetings has seen both teams to score.

Tottenham vs Man Utd Prediction:
All of the pressure is on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shoulders for this game. His job is on the line and if United were to lose heavy here and that could mean a score line of 3-0 it would be surprising if he kept his job. Even a draw and poor performance may not be enough and this has to be a convincing display all round. Defence is going to be key for the Red Devils because when you look at the players they have going forward they should be able to threaten Tottenham enough to open them up.
Tottenham have certainly had several sides to them and they remain unpredictable now. One has to wonder if Nuno Espirito Santo is getting the best out of his players, at the same time he has only been in the job for 3 months so it would be harsh to judge and the club have hardly started the season poorly. A case in point for Tottenham was ending a 3 game losing streak to beat an in form Aston Villa side the other week when the chips looked down for Spurs.
We could see an entertaining draw here with goals and plenty of chances for both sides and you get the feeling that the hierarchy at United are all up for that. This game then may not determine Solskjaer’s immediate future but it is difficult to feel that the United will be taking the forward steps they need to be achieving this weekend.
