Tottenham vs Man Utd: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 19th June 2020
Kick off at 8:15pm BST
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

Arguably no other manager in the Premier League has been raring to get back to football so quickly as Jose Mourinho. Photos emerged as early as April with Mourinho training with select players, social distancing we are sure, but Jose loves football and possibly hasn’t stopped planning for the league to return and his ultimate goal of securing Tottenham a top 4 finish.

At the time the pandemic struck Tottenham were facing a crisis with injuries piling up especially in the striking department and the club seemed to have lost their way in the league. They come into this game without a win in 3 matches and have dropped down to 8th place, and are 7 points from a Champions League finish. Players are back now and that includes Harry Kane and Mourinho will be hoping that the 3 month break is going to sway his club to find some form again.

Whilst Tottenham had won 8 of their 14 games at home they had also lost 4 games, which seems too much when you have a manager who once went 9 years without losing a home league fixture. There’s certainly a tinge of disappointment as regards to the fans about Mourinho’s debut season with the club and their last home game ended in defeat against Wolves.

As it stands Manchester United are currently Chelsea’s biggest threat for a Champions League finish. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team are in 5th place and just 3 points behind the Londoners. United were in good form, unbeaten in their last five and winning 3 of those games their last game finished with a fantastic 2-0 win over current champions and rivals Manchester City.

The problem for United has been their away form where they won have just 30% of games although their last two games on the road were impressive, beating Chelsea and drawing at Everton.

Team News:

Tottenham: Dele Alli is suspended for 1 game after his social media comments were punished by the FA. Troy Parrot is reported to have had an appendix operation and could likely miss this game and perhaps the next 2-3 after. Japhet Tanganga has a back injury and looks to be ruled out of this game

Manchester United: Phil Jones has a knock but has not been ruled out of this game and could face a late test. Currently he is the only doubt for the club

Tottenham vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Manchester United won the reverse fixture earlier in the season 2-1.

Manchester United have only won once from the last 7 away trips to Tottenham.

There is a 60% chance not to see both teams to score.

Marcus Rashford has scored 3 goals in the last two league meetings between the sides.

Tottenham vs Man Utd Prediction:

A huge fixture and it will be odd to see the very big games played to no fans. It is also a significant match for Tottenham, lose this one and the poor form from March could creep back in and a Champions League place would also feel more distant. For United they could go 6 points behind Chelsea with the likes of Sheffield United and Wolves putting pressure on them. Also for both teams there are statements to be made and either one winning will get that and could well push on to have a strong finish to this disjointed season.

Tottenham could benefit in these type of high tempo matches without fans who were clearly getting on the back of the players and Mourinho looked like he was under genuine pressure just a few months into his new role. The plus though is that he has his major players back, and we think they can take at least a point from this game. As it stands we have never experienced football returning after a pandemic and behind closed doors, that is why stakes should be kept to a minimum, but the home side are a good price and if Mourinho has been working hard behind the scenes they could well get it right here.
