Tottenham vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 28th January 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

A glance at the league table would show that these two teams have slipped up and have dropped back from the pace, and so this is a huge game for both sides where they must go for the win, a draw at this stage would do very little for the clubs.

Tottenham come into this game in 6th place with 33 points but would go 4th with a win and they are in good form, unbeaten in their last four games. At the weekend it was the FA Cup and as expected they beat Wycombe Wanderers with ease in the end but were losing that game 1-0.

Tottenham’s best case scenario is a win here, which would leave them 5 points behind Manchester City although if Manchester United have won their game Tottenham would be seven points from the top. At home overall Tottenham have not been good enough with just 45% of games won although they did beat Manchester City here and have lost once in their last five games at home.

It feels as if we are witnessing the Liverpool team being taken over by body snatchers from another planet, true that sounds bizarre but the level that the champions have dropped off has been nothing short of astounding. The Reds have won just 2 games from their last 10 and earned 3 points from their last 15. They lost their home unbeaten record to 15th placed Burnley, were knocked out of the FA Cup by arch rivals Manchester United and haven’t scored a goal in the league for a month.

As a result of their poor form Liverpool are six points from the top and that could be 9 if Manchester United have beaten Sheffield United on Wednesday night. Away form would see Liverpool in 13th place and they have drawn 5 of their nine games so far.

Team News:

Tottenham: Dele Alli has had a tendon injury and is touch and go for this match, but he could miss out. Ben Davies has a knock but it is thought to be minor, it is the same situation for Matt Doherty. Giovani Lo Celso isn’t expected back for another 10 days to two weeks at least due to his muscle injury.

Liverpool: Jordan Henderson missed the game v Burnley due to a muscle problem but is being tipped to be fine for this one. Diogo Jota is due back next week from his knee injury.

Tottenham vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 1-0.

Liverpool have won the last 5 league meetings in a row.

Tottenham have only won 1 game from their last 7 home meetings against Liverpool.

Tottenham vs Liverpool Prediction:

Tottenham have been good, sometimes spectacular this season but they haven’t reached the top level that perhaps one would expect of them, not on a consistent basis anyway. Winning a game like this could give the team a new belief to make a surge and get back into the mix. In many ways the same could be said for Liverpool and if Manchester United have won their latest game in midweek you would feel whoever loses this match will see their title chances really slipping away.

Tottenham will prepare well but they have a dreadful recent record against their opponents. At the same time Liverpool’s away form has been average as they tend to draw too many games. They have failed to score goals in their last 4 matches, although they did get 2 in their cup defeat to Manchester United. Mohamed Salah scored both goals and that would have done him the world of good.

A slice of luck or skill could be the order of the day, but we will back the away side in this encounter. Liverpool just seem to have the psychological edge, they have one their last 6 encounters against Spurs, and with Salah scoring again i think this will be a big ask for Spurs even with Liverpool's poor form.
