Tottenham vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 19th December 2021
Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

This fixture is steeped in history and we usually always get a very entertaining game from these two clubs.

Liverpool are where Tottenham want to be and it has been this situation by and large for the past 50 years. Tottenham could make a splash into the top five with a win but many will not be expecting it, however the club have been in rich form, undefeated in 4 games and winning 3 in a row coming into this one.

Tottenham’s last game finished in an easy 3-0 win over Norwich but the club haven’t played for two weeks because the bulk of the team have been struck down by Covid-19. This game may also be in the balance but for now it has been given the go ahead. There really is a window of opportunity here for Spurs who are in seventh place and five points behind 4th placed Arsenal with a five point gap. However Tottenham now have 3 games in hand to play over them and their rivals, so all of these games are huge moments for the club.

A good omen for Spurs is that they are unbeaten at home in the league since Antonio Conte took over and it has been 3 straight wins too. The club have won six of their eight games at home and have the fifth best record in the league.

Liverpool are in great form and are in 2nd place but just a point behind Manchester City, so everything could change this weekend. With Chelsea’s recent hiccups even if the Blues won and Liverpool lost the Reds would likely stay in 2nd place because of goal difference.

Liverpool’s last game ended in a 3-1 victory over Newcastle and they have spent their last two games at home. The Reds last away game ended in a 1-0 win over Wolves and before that they beat their city rivals Everton 4-1. It’s fair to say that it has been a good period for the club who also qualified for the knock out stages of the Champions League.

Team News:

Tottenham: Emerson Royal and Bryan Gil could return after recovering from Covid-19. Sergio Reguilon could also return from a muscle injury but will be assessed.

Liverpool: Fabinho is out as he has Covid-19 as is Virgil van Dijk. Curtis Jones had recovered from his eye injury but then got Covid-19 so he has been ruled out too. Divock Origi is out with his knee injury.

Tottenham vs Liverpool Prediction:

Liverpool will be made to work here but there have to be question marks over Tottenham. The team under Conte are doing well, they look stable but they haven’t really been tested yet and here it comes. Tottenham are a few levels below the top 3 clubs and that is no surprise and one wonders if Conte will change his tactics to a more defensive role for the visit of Liverpool.

As the game goes on Liverpool are so good at turning up the notches and switching gears and this will be a huge problem for Tottenham. Normally they could call upon Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son to do the job and create moments, but both have been poor this season and it’s hard from a punters point of view now to rely on them too heavily.

Liverpool should have too much here and while they are odds on their price is still favourable to get this job done
