England Premier League
Sunday 20th December 2020
Kick off at 2:15pm GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Match Preview:
This promises to be an attack minded game as Tottenham try to bounce back from their midweek defeat against Liverpool.
Jose Mourinho said that the best side in the Liverpool game lost, whilst Tottenham played well defensively and had chances in the game Liverpool did dominate with chances created and possession as they scored a last minute winner to come out 2-1 winners.
This was only Tottenham’s 2nd defeat of the season and on both occasions they have been beaten by Merseyside teams. By the time this match is played Tottenham will have known the outcome of the Liverpool game and it is possible that the Reds would have taken a six point lead over Mourinho’s side. This could really have a bearing on how this match pans out.
At home Tottenham have only won 50% of their games and that will need to be increased. Although the good news is that after a slow start they have won their last 3 in a row and haven’t been defeated here since Everton won on the opening weekend of the season three months ago. Recent results here have included beating Manchester City, so Tottenham should feel confident of a win.
Leicester are in 4th place after they were beaten by Everton at home in midweek. That was the Foxes 5th defeat of the season and it will be a concern for Brendan Rodgers as he hopes to see the club qualify for next seasons Champions League.
Leicester are able to put in solid performances however recent form cannot be classified as good given that they have earned just six points from the last 15. Away from home Leicester have the 2nd best record in the league taking 14 points from 21 and their last away game ended by beating Sheffield United 2-1. Leicester have won 5 from six games on the road and lost just once, this was against Liverpool.
Team News:
Tottenham: Gareth Bale has recovered from illness and should be back for this match. Japhet Tanganga is out for at least 2-3 weeks with a shoulder problem. Erik Lamela is still out with an unspecified problem.
Leicester: Timothy Castagne is being tipped to be back for this match after his hamstring injury.
Tottenham vs Leicester Head to Head:
Last season Tottenham won this meeting at home 3-0.
Leicester have not won at Tottenham in the league since 2016.
There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.
Tottenham vs Leicester Prediction:
Leicester’s defeat away to Liverpool felt telling for the season ahead, as if to tell us that the Foxes will be strong this season but are going nowhere fast and have not caught up with the top 2 sides. It is why feel the home side have the better chance at winning this tricky encounter.
We must remember that Tottenham were literally seconds away from claiming a draw at Liverpool and breaking the Reds 100% record, so they must be taken seriously.
Tottenham beat Manchester City here and of course Leicester put five goals past City away from home earlier this season. But the campaign seems to be settling down now and we expect to see an assured and professional display from Tottenham, who can’t afford to lose back to back games when the rival is Liverpool. We do also expect to see both teams get on the scoresheet.
