England Premier League
Saturday 23rd December 2023
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Match Preview:
Tottenham will be trying to take advantage of the fact that Manchester City are at the World Club Cup final and with victory here they would go into 4th place and fly past City. This game could prove pivotal to Tottenham’s Christmas run in as they try and forget a woeful November and get back on track. Certainly that seems to be the case as Ange Postecoglou’s side have won their last two games in beating Newcastle and Nottingham Forest and they are scoring goals again too, with six in their past two matches.
Whatever happens this weekend Tottenham can’t fall below 5th but they could start to lose ground to the top positions and that would be unfortunate for them after such a strong start to the season. Tottenham actually have a better away record so far and at home they can’t disguise that 3 games have been lost, there have been no draws so far and so 5 wins have been achieved from 8 games. The club's last home game was the thrashing of Newcastle and they will want to build on that.
Everton have been very positive in the league in the last month and would be 2nd on form alone. The Toffees have won their last 4 games in a row and fans will be in quite a dizzy spell lately as it has been so rare to see the club getting good results week in and week out. There have been wins over Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Chelsea and last weekend they put Burnley to the sword. It’s been a real mixture of opposition for Sean Dyche’s side who are well on their way to survival even after having to endure a recent 10 point deduction for breaking FFP rules. Everton have not just climbed out of the bottom three but have also gone past Nottingham Forest and come into this weekend in 16th place with 16 points and are seven clear of the bottom three. These are good times for the Toffees but they will still remain cautious. This was underlined in midweek when they were knocked out of the EFL Cup at the quarter final stage against Fulham, a side perhaps that would have expected to beat given that they were at home. The match finished 1-1 but ultimately Everton were beaten 7-6 on a tense penalty shoot out. It means that the club will come into this game with some disappointment given that it is going to have been 29 years since they lifted a trophy.
Team News:
Tottenham: Yves Bissouma is suspended for 4 games and won’t return until mid January. Destiny Udogie is also suspended but will return next week. Brennan Johnson is a doubt due to a head injury and may be rested. Giovanni Lo Celso is rated at just 50/50 to make this game due to a knock. James Maddison won’t return for another 3 weeks at least with his ankle, Ashley Phillips, Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Soloman all remain out for the year. Ivan Perisic is out for the season with a knee injury
Everton: Abdoulaye Doucoure (hamstring) and Vitaliy Mykolenko (muscle) will both be assessed ahead of the game. Ashley Young is expected to miss out with a muscle injury. Seamus Coleman will be assessed due to a knock. Andre Gomes has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness he may be assessed. Tottenham vs Everton Head to Head:
Last season Tottenham won this fixture 2-0.
It’s been 6 games since Everton recorded a victory.
3 of the last four meetings have seen under 2.5 goals.
Tottenham vs Everton Prediction:
Don’t let the fact that Tottenham have a growing injury list put you off, their first team is very strong and very attack minded especially at home. We did witness a weakness with the club for a month but the manager seems to have turned that around again. That dip has probably cost them a real shot at the title but the club remain a dangerous one.
Everton have been enjoying their football and taken scalps along the way, good ones in Newcastle and Chelsea but both of those wins were at home, away from home against a quality side is an all new ball game. The midweek cup exit could have taken something from the players and we are going to back the home side to march on up the table and make it 3 wins from three.
