Tottenham vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

Match Preview:

Tottenham still have a chance to mount a top 4 challenge although their dreams of doing so seem to unravel with every passing week. The club have lost 3 games from their last five and the Londoners are lacking the consistency needed to reach their objectives.

Tottenham have for many years been a club where they are up one moment and down the next and little has changed even with Antonio Conte in charge. Indeed the way the club have been performing seems to be driving Conte up the wall and this is coming out through the media. Only a few weeks ago he admitted that he was puzzled by the clubs form and even questioned if he should be at the club. Then last week he suggested that the Tottenham medical team be required to have their own press conferences so the wider public could understand why some players (Oliver Skipp) are taking so long to recover from injuries. Maybe there is some tongue in cheek about how Conte presents himself but all these little digs at the club do not bode well for the future and one has to wonder if Conte’s stay at Tottenham could be short lived?

Of course just two weeks ago the Italian was the hero to every Tottenham fan who sang his name as the club stunned Manchester City at the Etihad beating them 3-2. They have also smashed Leeds 4-0. But there have been the low moments too and even though Burnley have played some good football in the past six weeks as they try to survive, losing 1-0 against the team in 18th place was not in the Tottenham script. Last week Tottenham were also knocked out of the FA Cup against Middlesbrough. It was a huge loss for the club and one has to think of Harry Kane too who wanted to leave last summer and has still not won a trophy in his career. At home Tottenham have won 7 of their 12 games but have lost their last two here coming against Wolves and Southampton and we would have to go back to Boxing Day for the clubs last win at home.

Everton would have rejoiced without kicking a ball at the weekend as Burnley lost to Chelsea. Burnley are the most likeliest team to leap frog Everton and put the Toffees into the relegation zone but as it stands Sean Dyche’s side are a point behind and Everton have 2 games in hand over them. Leeds also lost at the weekend and even though they are 1 point better off than Everton they have played 3 games more. Everton’s position looks precarious but there will be some hope when looking at the teams around them but of course you have to win your games in hand and this match on Monday evening away to Tottenham looks very difficult indeed.

In midweek there was some joy for Frank Lampard’s team as they beat Boreham Wood 2-0 to advance to the quarter finals of the FA Cup where they will play Crystal Palace away from home. A winning feeling was needed even if it was against a non league side as Everton have lost 4 of their last 5 games and these have been bleak times for the club. However the club played well against Manchester City last weekend only losing 1-0 and of course they should have been awarded a penalty in a shocking decision not just for Everton but for the Premier League as a whole.

The worry for Everton has been their away form and they are yet to record a win under Frank Lampard on the road. However overall it has been poor and in fact Everton has the worst away record in the league with just one victory so far where they have won just 6 points from a possible 36. This includes losing their last 3 and in those games the club conceded 7 goals.

Team News:

Tottenham: There are no new injuries but Olivier Skipp (groin) and Japhet Tanganga (knee) are still out with no updates of a return.

Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin has made good progress with his groin injury and is being tipped to return for this game. Fabian Delph is touch and go to return for this game and next weekend is a more realistic date for him. Demerai Gray could return from illness as he had a fever last week and will be assessed. Ben Godfrey could return next week but will miss this game. Vitaily Mykolenko has a dead leg but he is being expected to be fine and Yerry Mina is out for another six weeks at least with a thigh injury.

Tottenham vs Everton Prediction:

Tottenham have clearly performed better than Everton this season and while they are chasing a Champions League place Everton are hoping to avoid relegation. So in terms of objectives Tottenham’s are light years ahead of their opponents. In terms of form and quality on the pitch there doesn’t seem like much in it.

Everton will be hurting from the Manchester City game though it would have been good for the club to have been able to play in the FA Cup between that match and this one and of course win. The non penalty in the City game will not eat up the players and manager now because they are professionals it was unjust but at the same time the club put in a terrific performance and they need to draw from that and use that as a positive energy.

In contrast Tottenham are a very good side but they look a disjointed mess, it doesn’t help the players when the manager comes out with sometimes bizarre statements and the mental feeling at the club has to be under question. Make no mistake this is a tough game for Everton but if they can control the pace and show the same passion as they did against City they are a brilliant price to get something out of this game.
