Tottenham vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 26th February 2023
Kick off at 1:30pm GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

Every London derby is as manic, frentic and end to end as the other and we do expect sparks to fly here. Tottenham are aiming for a top four finish and Chelsea are aiming to save face and finish in the top half of the table after a nightmare run of results.

Tottenham’s form coming into this game has been good with 3 wins from their last four and that has been enough to see them move back into the top four as Newcastle have slipped. While Tottenham has a 1 point advantage over the Magpies they have also played a game more but confidence will be good after they beat another London rival last weekend West Ham in a 2-0 win. Manchester City have also been beaten here recently so this bodes well for Antonio Conte’s side. Away form is still suspect, it has to be after a recent 4-1 battering at Leicester but at home the club seem content for now.

Graham Potter is under real pressure at Chelsea with no wins in their last 4 games and it is six weeks ago since they beat Crystal Palace. Since then there has been draws against Liverpool, Fulham and West Ham and last weekend they were shocked as they lost at home to the bottom club Southampton. In midweek a trip to Germany to play Borussia Dortmund ended also in a 1-0 defeat and one has to wonder where the next 3 points are coming from for the Blues? The pressure is on given the quality in the squad and the money that has been spent and it feels wrong to see the club in 10th place and 23 points behind the league leaders Arsenal. At the worst this season the new owners would have been expecting 4th place but even that objective looks distant as the club are 11 points behind Tottenham although they do have a game in hand.

Away form has seen no wins in almost 4 months with 3 points won from their last 15 although the last two games have ended in draws however with only 10 goals scored on the road that’s a poor return from the attacking quality the club has.

Team News:

Tottenham: There are no new injuries but the following are out long term and include Rodrigo Bentancur, Hugo Lloris, Yves Bissouma and Ryan Sessegnon.

Chelsea: Cesar Azilpilicueta is out with a head injury, N’Golo Kante has had a delayed return and will probably be sidelined for at least another 2 weeks. Edouard Mendy remains out with a hand injury and Christian Pulisic could be back in two weeks time from his knee injury.

Tottenham vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season in this fixture Tottenham lost 3-0.

Tottenham have no wins over Chelsea in the last 7 games and five of those have ended in defeats.

The last time Tottenham beat Chelsea in the league was in 2018.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Tottenham vs Chelsea Prediction:

The last time the sides met Antonio Conte had his hand gripped and pulled by Thomas Tuchel and he will be hoping that Graham Potter’s handshake isn’t as firm. This looks like being the game of the weekend in the Premier League as Tottenham have finally reached the top four but they need to sustain that now and move on and prove why they should be regarded as top four side. They are at home and at times have shone here but in other moments have looked underwhelming.

Chelsea need the win with the new players signed to get kickstarted and it should have happened last weekend and even then there was a delay. But this is dragging on and is a genuine worry for the club. Chelsea has a fantastic recent record over Tottenham but there has been a lot of change at the club in just six months and we shouldn’t look too much into what has gone before for any patterns. This game will tell us a lot about the teams going forward and we expect it to be a close one.
