Tottenham vs Chelsea: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 4th February 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

This should be a fantastic London derby as Tottenham who have had a few setbacks over the last week will face Chelsea complete with Thomas Tuchel as manager who will be overseeing his third game in charge.

Tottenham have had a reality check over the past week; first their defeat at home to Liverpool reminded them that they were only pretenders in the title race and Jose Mourinho’s team followed that up with defeat away to 17th placed Brighton who had not won at home this season.

Mourinho has described his players as feeling sad and it was probably an honest account that the team now know their limitations. Spurs’ 5th defeat of the season means that they are 11 points behind the league leaders and have 4 teams in between them. The target this season has to be Champions League qualification and they are six point adrift of 4th place and Leicester, although they do have a game in hand.

It’s just 1 win in their last four and Tottenham’s home record isn’t anything special either with just 40% of games won. Their 3-0 victory over Leeds is Tottenham’s only win at home in their last four, and to summarise recent form has been poor to average.

Chelsea started life under Thomas Tuchel with a frustrating draw at home to Wolves but they followed that up with a solid 2-0 victory against Burnley. In both games Chelsea dominated and they haven’t conceded a goal under Tuchel yet. Tuchel also hasn’t left London as both of Chelsea’s games were at home and now he visits north London for this midweek game.

It’s not worth delving deep into Chelsea’s form because the team will be different under Tuchel although the Blues will be hoping to change around their away form. Chelsea have lost 4 of their last 5 games on the road with their last away game ending in a 2-0 defeat at Leicester. This is a huge game nonetheless, it’s a derby but also both teams have 33 points and if West Ham lose to Aston Villa the winner of this game would go 5th.

Team News:

Tottenham: Harry Kane remains ruled out with an ankle injury and the update is that he could miss the next two weeks. Sergio Reguilon is only 50/50 after a recent muscle injury. Tanguy N’Dombele has a knock but he will be assessed ahead of the game. Giovani Lo Celso is ruled out again with a muscle injury. Dele Alli has a tendon injury and looks likely to miss out.

Chelsea: The Blues have no major injury concerns coming into this match.

Tottenham vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season Chelsea won this fixture 2-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the match ended 0-0.

From the last 10 league fixtures at Tottenham, Tottenham have won 3, Chelsea 3 and there have been 4 draws.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Tottenham vs Chelsea Prediction:

Tottenham feel like they are starting a slump and the worry is Jose Mourinho has been here before with his former club Chelsea and Manchester United. The club really miss Harry Kane when he’s injured, and Heung-Min Son will have to carry some of that weight. Tottenham were slow and had no plans against Brighton and a repeat performance here and they will get punished.

On the other hand Chelsea have played well in their first two games under Tuchel even if they drew their first game they dominated and created many chances. One feels this isn’t the type of game Tottenham would be asking for after the week they have had and Chelsea can come here and feel confident of a win. The Chelsea players are playing out of their skins to impress their new manager, and Tottenham are in for a very difficult game on Thursday night.
