Tottenham vs Brighton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Tuesday 23rd April 2019
Kick off at 7.45pm BST
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

It’s been quite a roller coaster week for Tottenham who ended up losing twice to Manchester City and still made the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The first match in the Champions League will go down as a classic as they scraped through with the help of quality such as Heung-Min Son’s emergence this season as a genuine top class striker, and VAR which erased Raheem Sterling’s last minute winner when it noticed an offside against Sergio Aguero. Tottenham will now play Ajax in the semis.

In the league the two teams met again on Saturday and City won again, this time instead of 4-3 it ended 1-0 in a tense game for the champions. As for Tottenham it was a comedown of sorts but they never really looked like getting the win, which they still need in order to finish in the top 4.

Tottenham come into this game on 67 points but there is still pressure from Chelsea, Arsenal and now to a lesser extent Manchester United who seem to have slowed down in recent weeks. Finishing 3rd is important for two reasons for Tottenham. The first is that failing to win the Champions League they will have qualified directly for the group stages once again. And secondly the club have held the position for a large portion of the season, to end up giving that up would make a good season a poor one.

Had Brighton played like they have in 2019 for the whole of the season they most probably would be rock bottom of the league. They ended a poor sequence of results with a hard fought 0-0 draw at Wolves, and had to put up with no less than 22 attempts at their goal. The point was massive considering that Cardiff in 18th lost again at the weekend to Liverpool.

It means that Chris Hughton’s side have a 3 point advantage over The Bluebirds and have a game in hand over them. If that wasn’t enough their goal difference is superior by 16, so in theory they have a 4 point lead, it looks very likely that they will survive, but they are not expected to pick up any points in Tottenham’s brand new shiny stadium.

Brighton have lost 11 games from 17 away from home this season and have just 1 win in their past five away encounters.

Team News:

Tottenham: Serge Aurier is still missing with a hamstring injury. Harry Kane’s ankle is set to make the striker miss the next 4 weeks at least. Erik Lamela will be assessed after his hamstring. Hugo Lloris is set to return after his muscle injury meant that he missed the game v Manchester City in the league. Moussa Sissoko has a groin injury and is being rated at 50/50 to return for this game. Harry Winks is also out with a groin injury

Brighton: Anthony Knockaert is suspended after his red card earlier in the month. Davy Propper is out with a hamstring injury

Tottenham vs Brighton Head to Head:

In the reverse fixture this match ended 2-1 to Tottenham.

Last season Tottenham won at home by 2-0.

The clubs have played each other 5 times since 2005 and Tottenham have 4 wins and there has been 1 draw.

There is a 60% chance that both teams will score.

Tottenham vs Brighton Prediction:

Tottenham have been as one would expect very strong in their new stadium, and in general plenty of time goes by before that first defeat happens. We have seen that in numerous examples from Arsenal to Juventus over the past decade. Tottenham are in a good frame of mind and they are playing a poor team with poor form. The only upshot for Brighton is that they gained a point away to Wolves in their last game but barring quite a surprise this should be a routine win for Spurs.

Tottenham have two dangerous matches coming up - West Ham at the weekend, a London derby will always be testing and then the 1st leg with Ajax in the Champions League. The club will want to start quick and have this game in the bag early doors and Brighton will not be able to cope with the fitness and pace of the club.
