England Premier League
Saturday 16th April 2022
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Match Preview:
The weekend of Premier League football kicks off with Tottenham at home to Brighton and the home side will be the favourites to earn all three points.
Antonio Conte’s team has emerged as the favourites to finish 4th after Arsenal’s slip and Tottenham’s good run which has seen them win their last 4 games. It’s been a month since Spurs tasted defeat and after losing to Manchester United they have beaten West Ham, Newcastle and Aston Villa scoring 9 goals in their last two games. The run started with a 2-0 win at Brighton and now the two clubs will face off again.
Tottenham are in 4th place and are 5 points behind 3rd placed Chelsea but have also played a game extra. But the objective for the club will be to keep 4th place and in doing so would justify Conte’s appointment. The club has a 3 point advantage over Arsenal in 5th although they have played a game more than the Gunners. However one key aspect is that Tottenham has a superior goal difference over their north London rivals. For now it seems likely that fourth place will belong to either Tottenham or Arsenal. At home Spurs have been generally strong with 10 wins from 15 games played and that includes winning their last 3 here.
Brighton did Tottenham a huge favour last weekend as they beat Arsenal and not many people would have seen that coming given that Graham Potter’s side were one of the worst teams on form in the league coming into that game. But the Seagulls ended their barren run by beating Arsenal 2-0 and were at one point two goals up in what felt like a surprise result.
Brighton are very safe in 11th place with 37 points and what made the victory over Arsenal that ever more surprising is that the club are not playing for anything. However that can also make a team dangerous when the players can relax and enjoy their football and that is something Arsenal paid dearly for. Brighton’s away form is actually better than at home and they have won 22 of their 37 points on the road. There have been recent losses against Newcastle and Manchester United away from home but the club have only lost three games so far with the clear majority of their results ending in draws, seven from 15 games played.
Team News:
Tottenham: Matt Doherty is a major doubt for this game after his recent knock. Oliver Skipp is still out with a groin injury.
Brighton: There are no new injuries for the club ahead of this game but Jakub Moder has suffered a knee injury and looks like he will miss the rest of the season.
Tottenham vs Brighton Head to Head:
In the reverse fixture which was only played a month ago Tottenham won 2-0.
The clubs have also played this year at Tottenham when they met in the FA Cup and Spurs won 3-1.
Tottenham have not lost at home to Brighton in 41 years.
The last 0-0 between the sides was back in 1977.
Tottenham vs Brighton Prediction:
Tottenham can roar six points in front of Arsenal with victory here and everything points to a home win. Tottenham have played Brighton twice already this year and put 5 goals past them with both games ending in victory but not just that Tottenham have a very good home record overall against the Seagulls.
Goals are flying in for Tottenham now after a slow start and Heung Min-Son has a fantastic chance to catch up Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as top goalscorer this season, he is just 3 goals behind. With the opportunity to rubber stamp 4th place it is difficult to look beyond a very in form Tottenham side and the least Conte will be demanding of his players is to perform at home.
Brighton will take a lot from beating Arsenal and the players will be upbeat coming into this game but Tottenham should have too much for them and we see only one winner. Watch out for Harry Kane who has gone a few games without scoring even though Tottenham have been doing so for fun but he likes to score against this opponent and has 3 goals in the last two fixtures.
