England Premier League
Sunday 6th December 2020
Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Match Preview:
There’s nothing quite like a London derby and they don’t come any bigger than Tottenham and Arsenal.
Tottenham come into the weekend in 1st place but only on goal difference to Liverpool but they are on a rich vein of form and have been looking dangerous in recent weeks. Their opening weekend loss against Everton remains their only defeat so far and they have won 13 of their last 15 points available.
There are good vibes at Spurs and the club are performing well on the pitch having scored 21 goals so far, only Liverpool and Chelsea have scored more with 22 and with 9 goals conceded Tottenham have the best defence. At home Jose Mourinho’s team have only won 40% of their games but remain unbeaten in their last four, winning their last two, and their last home win was a fantastic 2-0 victory over Manchester City.
Last weekend Tottenham went to Chelsea and drew 0-0 and this was also seen as a very decent away result for the club.
Arsenal continue to perform wonders in the Europa League where they easily beat Rapid Vienna in midweek. Though one could argue that the Gunners do not have the strongest of groups, wins are wins and you can only beat who is in front of you, and Arsenal have made it to the knock out stages of the competition. That’s the good news. The bad news is their domestic form, and manager Mikel Arteta remains under intense pressure if Arsenal cannot turn it around.
Currently Arsenal are in 14th place and 8 points behind Tottenham, they have 1 win in their last five games and last weekend they lost 2-1 against Wolves, and have lost their last 3 matches at home. The Gunners have actually won more points away from home, seven from 15 and drew their last game on the road 0-0 against Leeds.
Team News:
Tottenham: Toby Alderweirald has recovered much quicker than thought from a groin injury and is 50/50 to make the team. Carlos Vinicius has a knock but is being tipped to be fine for the match. Harry Kane was reported as having a knock but is expected to be fine for this game. Hugo Lloris has an unspecified problem and is a doubt for the game. Erik Lamela is set to miss out again for an unspecified reason.
Arsenal: David Luiz is being tipped to be fine for this game after his head injury last weekend. Reports suggest that Thomas Partey has recovered from his thigh injury and he will face a late assessment. Nicolas Pepe is serving a 3 game suspension for his red card v Leeds.
Tottenham vs Arsenal Head to Head:
Last season Tottenham won this fixture 2-1.
Arsenal have not won at Tottenham in the league since 2014.
Both teams have scored in this fixture in the last 4 meetings in a row.
Tottenham vs Arsenal Prediction:
This has been a fixture where Arsenal usually have started as the favourites but there has been a clear shift of power in north London over the past couple of years and Tottenham will be expected to get all three points.
But football isn’t as simple as that and even though Arsenal have been poor we should expect them to raise their game and give Tottenham a hard match. Arteta will need something from his players who have really lacked ideas lately. If they put in a performance and lose 1-0 you sense that Arteta’s job is safe, if they collapse and lose 4 or 5-0 would it be safe to presume that his job is under threat?
If Tottenham stick to their game plan it is hard to see Arsenal keeping Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane quiet. Spurs are the only team out of the two that seem to have a vision at present and that could be telling.
